Record Highlight — Branford Marsalis

Legendary saxophonist Branford Marsalis and his tight-knit working band will deliver Four MFs Playin’ Tunes on deluxe 180-gram vinyl on April 21, 2012.

This is the first recording of the Branford Marsalis Quartet with an electrifying young drummer that joined the band three years ago and the results are a nimble and sparkling album, featuring ambitious original compositions by members of the band, a Thelonious Monk classic, and one standard dating to 1930.

The record blends the beautiful and subtle ballad sounds of the 2004 release  Eternal with the ecstatic contrasts of the critically-acclaimed Braggtown.  In other words, this just might be the Branford Marsalis Quartet’s most sublime musical achievement yet.

This is the first vinyl release from Marsalis Music, and will not be available digitally until August (but the vinyl contains a digital download code).

In describing Four MFs Playin’ Tunes, Marsalis recalls a television interview program on which famed bandleader and drummer Art Blakey was asked to describe jazz in one word.  Blakey’s answer? “Intensity, intensity, intensity.” The Branford Marsalis Quartet has built their reputation by bringing intensity to each and every live and recorded performance, including the ballads.  Says Marsalis, “Even if people don’t know what we’re doing, they’ll feel what we’re doing.”

Hit up your local Independent Record Store around April 21 (Record Store Day) to grab a copy!

Record Highlight — Caustic Casanova

Caustic Casanova is a hard rock power trio operating out of America’s proud capital city (of rock!), Washington, DC. The CC, as they are affectionately known by their fans, has been tearing up stages and studios alike with their unique brand of diverse, heavy music since their inception on the campus of The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia in 2005.

Caustic Casanova has gigged extensively in DC, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts since returning to live performances in summer 2008. They have been described as “riff royalty” (Submission Magazine) who possess “…an air of optimism and freshness…that’s been lacking from the music scene for well over a decade now (Voltcase).” They recently finished second in The Deli Magazine Readers’ Poll for “Best Emerging Artist from DC/Baltimore 2010,” out of over 40 nominated artists. In summer 2011 they headlined on the big red stage at the legendary Fort Reno Summer Concert Series music festival in Washington, DC, bringing their “original brand of off-metal, slight psyche, quirky and powerful rock music” to their biggest live audience yet (DC Rock Live).  Their latest record, Someday You Will Be Proven Correct, recorded and produced by J. Robbins and mastered by Bob Weston, is now available for pre-order as a very limited 2-LP set with hand-engraved artwork etched into the 4th side of the record.

Record Highlight — The Anchor Windlass

The Anchor Windlass formed in Minneapolis in the fall of 2009 with Anton, Danger, Gabe, and Max Peters.  In the summer of 2010 Max left the band and Minneapolis to live in a town with a much worse music scene, but better lakes and school systems.  Shortly thereafter, Nick Johnson was recruited to play lead guitar and tell us on what gear to buy.  Since then The Anchor Windlass has played a whole slew of gigs around the Twin Cities with a whole host of really rad local bands.

Thanks to the guys for hiring GGR to press the band’s debut LP, Fair Winds and Following Seas — we just shipped them out this week, so be sure to stay tuned to the band to grab a copy.

Record Highlight — The Strange Attractors

Austin psych-rock luminaries The Strange Attractors are back with their boldest release on Past/Futures Records to date.  Midnight at Xochil’s is the third full length for the Austin, Texas based quartet, which includes former and current members of the Riverboat Gamblers and the Ugly Beats, among others.

After 6 years of searing psych rock nihilism, band founder Jeremy Diaz’s vision to streamline the sound is realized with Xochil’s — a group of beautifully written songs, simplistic in their sophistication. From raging psych rock tension ala Spacemen 3 to soft Jesus and Mary Chain-inspired lullaby/dirges, the album is  delivered with a maturity and confidence not yet seen from the band, and in turn proves to be the most honest.

Producer Che Arthur was on hand in Austin with Engineer Michael Landon (Okkervil River, Neil Michael Hagerty) for the fiendishly paced 4 day recording session. Afterwards the record was taken to Chicago for mixing and mastering. Theres something for everyone here – the lineage of old Texas psych rock is still prevelant, and new fans are sure to enjoy the evolution of a group that is constantly breaking new ground.

Record Highlight — Apples In Stereo

Fun Trick Noisemaker was the first full-length installment in the ongoing musical journey that has grown out of Apples In Stereo frontman Robert Schneider’s infatuation with recording techniques; ranging from four-track bedroom recordings to 100-track studio experiments, to creating new musical scales and mind-controlled synthesizers. Not to mention his ongoing obsession with writing the perfect pop song, a song “that even little kids or your grandparents can sing along with,” as Schneider put it at the time. That creative journey continues until this day. But more than just a starting point, Fun Trick Noisemaker stands on its own today as a masterpiece in the indie rock canon, featuring some of the band’s most loved and indelible tracks such as: “Green Machine”; “Glow Worm” and “Tidal Wave” (featuring one of the most rip roaring lead guitar lines ever put to wax.)
