Record Highlight — Velvet Elvis

The debut full length LP from Velvet Elvis, In Deep Time was recorded at GFI Studios in the early months of 2012, where Velvet Elvis drank deep from the well of rock to bring about six dark tracks of paranoia and depravity that call up hallucinogenic visions of a future gone wrong.  The songs thunder and crash, sweep and swoon with a greater depth and clarity and vision than we have seen from this band in the past. An expanded sense of texture and dynamics move their signature plodding riffs along to crescendos that could open a hole in the sky. In Deep Time is pure unapologetic rock and roll.  The album was produced by Velvet Elvis and Sam Polizzi and mastered for vinyl by Joe Lambert.

Hand numbered, in a imited edition of 300 copies that include a lyric sheet, a section of the analog tape included in the recording process, and digital download card containing the whole album with exclusive bonus track “Brass Tacks”.  Pre-order is up now!

Record Highlight — Sydney Wayser

Sydney Wayser is a French-American, New York-based singer-songwriter who plays guitar, piano and children’s toys. Growing up in Los Angeles with summers spent in Paris, she draws on a wide range of influences and inspirations, from Edith Piaf, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Jacques Brel, to John Lennon, Jeff Buckley, and Sigur Ros

Her third album, Bell Choir Coast, has been two years in the making; struggling to express herself creatively in the midst of a miserable New York winter, Wayser decided that if she couldn’t go elsewhere, she’d bring other lands to her. “Bell Choir Coast is about a fictional land that I made up, because I couldn’t leave New York and I had to make my record. So I made up a new world in my head that was everything I wanted.”  More than an record, it is an atlas, a map past difficult years and emotional terrain, to a place of self-understanding and agency. Sydney Wayser set about to make an album, and in the end she cleared a path to a world, and in the process she found her tribe and her sound.

Record Highlight — M2

M2 is two Miller brothers: Roger (Boston: Mission of Burma and Alloy Orchestra) and Benjamin (NYC: Ben Miller/degeneration and Sensorium Saxophone Orchestra).

M2 has recently signed on with Northampton’s FEEDING TUBE RECORDS to release their album, At Land’s Edge.  This is an appropriate title as the music morphs and shifts at the meeting point of solidity and watery luminescence.  The two brothers are both excited about the release and plan to do some shows in the New England/East Coast area upon its release, as time allows.

Benjamin plays his unique “Multiphonic Guitar” which involves multiple pickups, preparations, and electronic devices modifying sounds after the fact.  Roger plays Prepared Piano, utilizing bronze bolts and alligator clips (and many other items) stuck on and between the piano’s strings to completely alter the sound of the instrument.  Their unique sound pallet is at times ambient, at times rhythmically pulsing, and at times aggressive.  Between the two of them, the usual sounds of a piano/guitar duo are thoroughly avoided.

The music is entirely improvised, with bravura technique sublimated for ensemble sound.  It is the gradual, occasionally sudden, shifting and interplay between the two brothers that defines their sound.  They have been playing/improvising together off and on since 1969 (beginning with the psych. rock band Sproton Layer), so there is an effortless give and take in their interaction.

Record Highlight — For Today

On Immortal, For Today‘s fourth full length LP, the band worked with producer Will Putney (Lamb Of God, Suicide Silence) who previously worked on Breaker, their 2010 release.  They recently confirmed the Vans Warped Tour for this summer, and are kicking off 2012 with the nationwide headlining Fight The Silence Tour. As forthcoming about their faith as they are about their musical prowess, For Today have become widely known as one of modern metal’s most technically proficient bands.

This pressing is limited to three color variants — gray, white, and cyan blue; and it streets on May 29.

Record Highlight — Daniel Bachman

Oh Be Joyful — available now from One Kind Favor Records.

This is the second full length LP by steel string guitarist Daniel Bachman (who formerly recorded and performed as Sacred Harp).  Though young in years, he plays with a technical facility and emotional depth equal to that of the greatest fingerstylists.  His discography is already full of strong releases, but this new recording is the first I’ve heard to fully capture the intimate beauty that many have witnessed in his live acoustic performances across the country.  Authenticity has been a issue that has plagued folk music for much of the 20th century and these days anyone can pick up a style that was previously known only to a few mountainfolk.  While Bachman’s playing is surely reminiscent of the spiritual searching sound of Robbie Basho, and indeed the spectre of Fahey looms large, he is no Johnny-come-lately.  The distinct sound you will hear on this record is inspired by the traditions and lore unique to Fredericksberg, Virginia, also the hometown of Jack Rose (may God watch over his soul).  Limited edition one time pressing of 500 copies.  Listen

Record Highlight — Fake Limbs

Fake Limbs has man feelings.   Fake Limbs is Chicago’s newest premier heavy rock and roll band.   Fake Limbs play “balls-out” r’n’r with a refreshing punk arrogance. Overtones of Jesus Lizard-like wailing, Shellac -type stagger, and Pere Ubu-esque artiness make it all the more awesome. We highly suggest ordering this record, right now.  (all pre-orders will receive a link to a quality digital download of the album almost instantly).

Record Highlight — Raglani

Husk, a career-spanning double-LP retrospective marking Raglani’s “early period” (2004-2009), is both the artist’s “Best-of” collection, as well as a document of a personal orientation within the canon of electronic music.  As a devoted student of E.M. history and synthesis techniques, Joseph Raglani has spent the past decade in his St. Louis studio consuming and refiguring.  While highly-informed, these tracks avoid simple derivation, the traces of influence are not easily decipherable; the common descriptors fall away.  The sonic legacies orbiting the INA GRM axis cross paths with pop sensibilities more akin to the sensuous pulse of New Order.  Raglani mines the expressiveness of this fertile boundary space.  The compositions on Husk are dense featuring a palette of analog and digital electronic instruments as well as guitar, voice, pedal steel, organ, melodica. Disparate elements find a way to resonate to maximum emotive effect.  The sonic energies are not bound to their sources, but are rather utilized for their ability to express.

One fourth of the material is available here for the first time; the remainder from private-press and small run releases has been remixed by Raglani and re-mastered by Greg Davis for presentation in this collection.  Husk is Raglani’s second mass-market release following his 2008 CD Of Sirens Born released on Kranky Records.  Artwork by Robert Beatty (Three Legged Race / Hair Police / Resonant Hole).  In an edition of 500 copies with printed inner-sleeves.
