Record Highlight — Sydney Wayser

Sydney Wayser is a French-American, New York-based singer-songwriter who plays guitar, piano and children’s toys. Growing up in Los Angeles with summers spent in Paris, she draws on a wide range of influences and inspirations, from Edith Piaf, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Jacques Brel, to John Lennon, Jeff Buckley, and Sigur Ros

Her third album, Bell Choir Coast, has been two years in the making; struggling to express herself creatively in the midst of a miserable New York winter, Wayser decided that if she couldn’t go elsewhere, she’d bring other lands to her. “Bell Choir Coast is about a fictional land that I made up, because I couldn’t leave New York and I had to make my record. So I made up a new world in my head that was everything I wanted.”  More than an record, it is an atlas, a map past difficult years and emotional terrain, to a place of self-understanding and agency. Sydney Wayser set about to make an album, and in the end she cleared a path to a world, and in the process she found her tribe and her sound.

Record Highlight — Daniel Bachman

Oh Be Joyful — available now from One Kind Favor Records.

This is the second full length LP by steel string guitarist Daniel Bachman (who formerly recorded and performed as Sacred Harp).  Though young in years, he plays with a technical facility and emotional depth equal to that of the greatest fingerstylists.  His discography is already full of strong releases, but this new recording is the first I’ve heard to fully capture the intimate beauty that many have witnessed in his live acoustic performances across the country.  Authenticity has been a issue that has plagued folk music for much of the 20th century and these days anyone can pick up a style that was previously known only to a few mountainfolk.  While Bachman’s playing is surely reminiscent of the spiritual searching sound of Robbie Basho, and indeed the spectre of Fahey looms large, he is no Johnny-come-lately.  The distinct sound you will hear on this record is inspired by the traditions and lore unique to Fredericksberg, Virginia, also the hometown of Jack Rose (may God watch over his soul).  Limited edition one time pressing of 500 copies.  Listen

Record Highlight — Fake Limbs

Fake Limbs has man feelings.   Fake Limbs is Chicago’s newest premier heavy rock and roll band.   Fake Limbs play “balls-out” r’n’r with a refreshing punk arrogance. Overtones of Jesus Lizard-like wailing, Shellac -type stagger, and Pere Ubu-esque artiness make it all the more awesome. We highly suggest ordering this record, right now.  (all pre-orders will receive a link to a quality digital download of the album almost instantly).

Record Highlight — Magnolia Mountain

Town & Country is Cincinnati-based Magnolia Mountain‘s new LP, and the third pressed here at GGR (thanks guys!).

The album release show is this friday, (4/20) at the beautiful Taft Theatre Ballroom in downtown Cincinnati.  They will be joined onstage by special guests Ricky Nye on piano and organ, and Brian Hogg on saxophone!  Support acts for the night are Chuck Cleaver and Lisa Walker (of Wussy – btw, check out their new album, also pressed here at GGR and available on RSD), Jeremy Pinnell & The 55’s, and Tom Evanchuck & The Old Money!  Don’t miss it!

Record Highlight — Lights Resolve

Three men, covering two ends of the sound spectrum, share one common vision. For the expansive alternative trio Lights Resolve, it’s all about maximizing their assets: engaging and arresting listeners with just three instruments and a microphone. Now armed with their debut full-length, the band is about to bring their sonically galactic, yet incredibly minimalist, message to the masses.  Lights Resolve—which also includes drummer Neal Saini and bassist Luke Daniels—formed in Long Island, NY in 2006 after the trio’s former lead vocalist departed from their prior four-piece outfit.

For their first full-length LP, Feel You’re Different, Lights Resolve sequestered itself in Bethpage, NY with legendary Long Island producer Mike Sapone (Brand New, Taking Back Sunday), who, per his credentials, drove the band to log their most impressive studio performance to date. Thematically, the album developed into both a commentary on embracing individuality and coming to grips with one’s own personal development; both are topics the members of Lights Resolve know all too well from recent years.

The ultra-limited edition vinyl package features extensive artwork with silver accents, four vinyl colors, and oh by the way – the record plays from the center outward.

Record Highlight — Apples In Stereo

Fun Trick Noisemaker was the first full-length installment in the ongoing musical journey that has grown out of Apples In Stereo frontman Robert Schneider’s infatuation with recording techniques; ranging from four-track bedroom recordings to 100-track studio experiments, to creating new musical scales and mind-controlled synthesizers. Not to mention his ongoing obsession with writing the perfect pop song, a song “that even little kids or your grandparents can sing along with,” as Schneider put it at the time. That creative journey continues until this day. But more than just a starting point, Fun Trick Noisemaker stands on its own today as a masterpiece in the indie rock canon, featuring some of the band’s most loved and indelible tracks such as: “Green Machine”; “Glow Worm” and “Tidal Wave” (featuring one of the most rip roaring lead guitar lines ever put to wax.)

Customer Highlight — Hot Tuna

Hot Tuna is back with Steady As She Goes, their first all-new studio album in 20 years! Founding members Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady masterfully blend Americana rock with blues and acoustic folk on a record that hits their full spectrum of styles from electric and acoustic Hot Tuna to their days in Jefferson Airplane.

During their more than four decade long career Jorma and Jack have created some of the most significant music of our time and Steady As She Goes proves that they remain one of the most innovative bands in American music. Recorded at Levon Helm’s studio and produced by Grammy-winning producer Larry Campbell, the album captures the energy of their live performances with Barry Mitterhoff on mandolin, drummer Skoota Warner (Cyndi Lauper, Matisyahu, Santana) as well as Campbell joining them on guitar, fiddle, organ and vocals.

With their amps turned up to eleven, Hot Tuna rips into the blistering opener “Angel of Darkness” and puts the wind in your sails with the ‘hop on your Harley and take to the road’ free-spirit jams like “Easy Now Revisited” and “A Little Faster.” Steady As She Goes tastefully mixes in the acoustic side of Tuna with folk tunes like the moving “What Might Have Been” and the reflective “Second Chances.” Along with masterful covers of the blues-rock infused “If This is Love” and a funky rendition of Reverend Gary Davis’ “Children of Zion”.  The record is half-speed mastered and pressed on 180 gram vinyl, with etched art on the fourth side.  The record is available from Red House Records and  indie retailers everywhere beginning July 12!

Customer Highlight — Frank & Jesse

Frank & Jesse plays music that is reflective of both who they are as people and the lives they lead. Formed by old friends in the winter of 2009, the band quickly gained prominence in their hometown of Toledo, OH as a must-see act. They take pride in all of their roots, both musically and culturally, and play every show with the tried and true attitude that it might be their last. Honest as hell and not afraid to turn every amp up to 10, they are a down and out, pure and simple, rock’n’roll band.

With their first album, Let it Come Down, Frank & Jesse gives us 10 songs that span all of the band’s musicality. Charging rockers like “Albuquerque” and “Breakdown,” slower ballads such as “Out of Touch” and “Take my Time” and even a bit of country – in the shape of “Baton Rouge” – blend seamlessly as a coherent and unified piece. These songs were born out of a place familiar to anyone who has lived in the American Midwest. It is rust belt romance music, sung by those who know it well.

Let It Come Down has been slaved over for more than a year. As Frank & Jesse rapidly approach the release of the culmination of their hard work, a decision has been made to release these songs in the tradition as timeless and valued as the rock music these gentlemen play – vinyl.

You can preview the album online, or catch the band live to grab a copy of this wax for yourself!

Customer Highlight — Cemetery Urn

Out now from Hells Headbangers on 180gram vinyl in a glossy gatefold cover with large 18×24 poster!

The second full-length Cemetery Urn album maintains their self-proclaimed style of “Australia Barbaric Death Metal,” yet displays a refinement in the bands style & production techniques while steering well clear of the modern overproduced sound of today. Damon Bloodstorm formerly of war metal legends Bestial Warlust leads the assault with undoubtedly the best vokills of his long career. Andrew Gillon lays down a brutal onslaught of guitars with lead work that is at times moody & epic, before launching into the faster almost shredding style displayed on later Abominator albums. “The Conquered Are Burned” evokes the primacy of early 90’s Death Metal without entirely adhering to the trends of Incantation and Swedish Death Metal worship like the majority of today.
