Record Highlight — Garrison Hawk

Survive is the long awaited, full-length from Garrison Hawk with Sly & Robbie. He’s a toaster, a rapper, mc, a great writer…but most of all he’s a bad ass singer. “Wild” is the party track; “Murderer,” “What She Wants,” “Reggae Music” and “Don’t Ya Know” are the hooky business; “Gangster For Life” and “Running Red” have that uptempo Jamaican feel; “Apocalypse” features a stripped down Raga muffin style; and the title track is an anthem featuring Ethiopian artist Teddy Afro and Gigi.  This is the perfect LP to kick off your summer…available at indie record stores everywhere!

Record Highlight — Mars

MarsLive At Artists Space – available in an edition of 500 from Feeding Tube Records.

In May of 1978 there was a five night music festival at Artists Space on Hudson Street in Tribeca.  Although almost no one cared at the time, the event has since entered the halls of legend, as one of the signal events in the history of the No Wave era – one that managed to include both the Lower East Side bands  and those fronted by their Western contemporaries. On the final night of the festival the two bands playing were Mars and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. What we are presenting to you today are both sets by Mars – the most mysterious, and bizarrely-styled NY band of their day. One set takes up each side, and while they are similar in song selection, it’s wild to hear how different they are in terms of attack, sonics and approach. The quartet – Nancy Arlen, China Burg, Sumner Crane, Mark Cuningham – was never captured at its mutational best in the studio, but this live slab is revelatory.  Tunings, structures and rhythms from a place Capt. Beefheart once called “the other side of the fence,” this is Mars at their most glorious.

Record Highlight — You Blew It!

You Blew It! might be one of the last great hold-outs in the emo revival that took over the last decade. More sane than Algernon Cadwallader, less sonically-spacious than Cap’n Jazz, YBI! cherrypicks from 90’s emo and indie in a fashion that many have aimed for but few have achieved. These cat-loving, taco-eating dudes have been holding it down in their native Orlando scene since February 2009. Since then, they’ve had enough lineup changes to see something like twelve members come and go all while completing four out-of-state tours and a few notable gigs with The Get Up Kids.

The brand new album from You Blew It!, Grow Up, Dude is the band’s debut full length. Featuring twelve new tracks, the first pressing is out of 500 and split between 75 clear w/ green splatter, 100 opaque green, 125 white, 200 Black.  Pre-order is up now with Topshelf Records!

Record Highlight — Tony Conrad, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and Edley ODowd

Angry Love presents the third release in the “handmade” vinyl records series – Tony Conrad, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and Edley ODowd recorded live at the HAU2, February 2011.

Utilizing recycled colored vinyl, each slab is completely unique and comes housed in a recycled craft paper jacket emblazoned with a removable embroidered patch attached to the front cover. Also included is an 8” x 8” black and white booklet featuring photos from the concert as well 2 postcard sized replicas of the original concert poster (one design: one for mailing and one for keeping). Each package was lovingly stamped and assembled by hand, and the release is strictly limited to 230 copies only.

Record Highlight — Velvet Elvis

The debut full length LP from Velvet Elvis, In Deep Time was recorded at GFI Studios in the early months of 2012, where Velvet Elvis drank deep from the well of rock to bring about six dark tracks of paranoia and depravity that call up hallucinogenic visions of a future gone wrong.  The songs thunder and crash, sweep and swoon with a greater depth and clarity and vision than we have seen from this band in the past. An expanded sense of texture and dynamics move their signature plodding riffs along to crescendos that could open a hole in the sky. In Deep Time is pure unapologetic rock and roll.  The album was produced by Velvet Elvis and Sam Polizzi and mastered for vinyl by Joe Lambert.

Hand numbered, in a imited edition of 300 copies that include a lyric sheet, a section of the analog tape included in the recording process, and digital download card containing the whole album with exclusive bonus track “Brass Tacks”.  Pre-order is up now!

Record Highlight — Sydney Wayser

Sydney Wayser is a French-American, New York-based singer-songwriter who plays guitar, piano and children’s toys. Growing up in Los Angeles with summers spent in Paris, she draws on a wide range of influences and inspirations, from Edith Piaf, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Jacques Brel, to John Lennon, Jeff Buckley, and Sigur Ros

Her third album, Bell Choir Coast, has been two years in the making; struggling to express herself creatively in the midst of a miserable New York winter, Wayser decided that if she couldn’t go elsewhere, she’d bring other lands to her. “Bell Choir Coast is about a fictional land that I made up, because I couldn’t leave New York and I had to make my record. So I made up a new world in my head that was everything I wanted.”  More than an record, it is an atlas, a map past difficult years and emotional terrain, to a place of self-understanding and agency. Sydney Wayser set about to make an album, and in the end she cleared a path to a world, and in the process she found her tribe and her sound.
