Record Highlight – Superstorms

Superstorms, a new solo project by ex-Tusco Terror/sometimes Trouble Books member Michael Tolan, is born out of creative impulses that are simultaneously subversive of and sensitively attuned to their musical lineage(s). Frustrated and bored with the tropes of contemporary ambient music, Tolan began experimenting with harsh digital samples and clipping source material, finding himself liberated at the prospect of productively using sounds which previously would have been left to lie dormant on the cutting room floor. He began working with a palette comprised of in-the-red, bit-crushed digitalia, setting to work kneading these stubborn blocks of harsh sound into a sequence of five pieces which, despite their considerable barbs, retain the fluidity and pathos of the ambient tradition from which they were inspired. Tolan’s Tusco Terror/harsh noise connections rear their head in the form of both the intensely prickly and pointillistic aspects of each composition and by way of the informal, spontaneous, almost punk sensibilities which they each possess. Indeed, Superstorms is at once organic and robotic, forceful and calm, coherent and unpredictable. In short, it is a meshing of oppositions- binaries smashed together and expertly sculpted into truly powerful sonic miasma.

Record Highlight — Balmorhea

Available from Western Vinyl:  On Stranger, Balmorhea continues the cosmic dialog they began with their eponymous debut in 2007. Though the spirit of Texas’ early inhabitants and the weight of the night sky inspired previous albums All is Wild, All is Silent (2009) and Constellations (2010), Stranger shifts the focus from the celestial to the terrestrial, or more accurately, it begins to explore the celestial resonance in all things terrestrial.

Balmorhea’s music has always been guided by the experience of living in Texas, but with Stranger the band moves beyond contemplative reverence for the land and the history of their home state. The most forward-leaning of their catalog, Stranger presents worlds of tenderness, aggression, estrangement, and freedom using an expanded sonic palette including guitar loops, vibes, synthesizers, ukulele, and steel pan drums. In addition to these new sounds, electric guitars and percussion take the stage once occupied by piano and acoustic guitars.

Stranger explores the kinetic rhythms that dictate our day-to-day lives, fascinated by the wanderlust that drove the itinerant hearts of our earliest settlers and that continues to pulse in the kids roaming Texas’ suburban sprawl. Unsettled, but patient, these songs embrace everyday sensuality, youthful discovery, and nomadic reverie…awe-struck by the divine energy that permeates all of our earthly fauna and flora.

Record Highlight — Old Hundred

Old Hundred is pleased to announce the release of their second full-length album ‘Time in the Wild’. The record will be released on Labor Day weekend with shows on Friday, August 31 and Saturday, September 1 at the Kobo Bar in Columbus, Ohio.

Paste Magazine named Old Hundred one of the “10 Ohio Bands You Should Listen to Now” in April of 2012. In May, the band performed at the Nelsonville Music Festival alongside Iron & Wine, Andrew Bird, and M. Ward. They will perform this September at the Midpoint Music Festival featuring Grizzly Bear, Dirty Projectors, and more. They were also selected as the “Best Local Band of 2010” by Columbus Underground voters. They have also opened for Mumford and Sons, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Dawes, Phosphorescent, Horse Feathers, and many more.

‘Time in the Wild’ is being released with help from Wide-Eyed Records, a Columbus-based music collective and label. The record was recorded at 3 Elliot Studios in Athens, Ohio and was mastered by Jeff Lipton at Peerless Mastering. You can grab the record at the Labor Day Weekend release shows, or from the band now!

Record Highlight — Arms

ARMS is what happens when the back burner bursts into flame. A one-time side project transformed into a full band, ARMS synthesizes Todd Goldstein’s years of bedroom experimentation and sharpens them into a single bright blade. ARMS’ full-band debut, Summer Skills, explodes the lo-fi pop of 2008’s Kids Aflame into a widescreen epic, telling a fractured tale of love under supernatural circumstances. Sonically generous and emotionally raw, ARMS’ Summer Skills lures listeners like a siren song and then pulls them into the deep.

Record Highlight — Such Gold

Misadventures isn’t just the title of Rochester, New York-based melodic hardcore band Such Gold‘s debut full-length- as Nate Derby explains, it’s a way of life.

Misadventures, is 28 minutes of pure aggression that will quicken your pulse and make you think. Derby and drummer Devan Bentley write much of the music, while frontman Ben Kotin and guitarist Skylar pen much of the lyrics. It’s that collaborative mindset that allows the band to take risks together, even if it means agonizing over each and every song. “We’re not a band that can just sit down and bang out a record in a week,” Derby admits. “It takes me forever to write a song even to a point where I can bring it to our drummer Devan and write stuff with him.”

“Our producer was all about capturing the band for it’s live energy, too. We mapped out the tempos, so it really feels like you’re listening to us live,” explains drummer Bentley. He continues “I’m really happy that we were able to capture my own drum sounds on this record. No samples replacing all the hits, no crazy amounts of editing. It’s me hitting those drums. Same goes with everyone’s playing, especially Ben.”

Record Highlight — The Nightmare River Band

Making music about “love, loss, pain, drinking and healing,” although not necessarily in that order, The Nightmare River Band was named one of the Top 5 up and coming Alt-Folk bands in NYC by Deli Magazine in 2010. Crowds of revelers have been quick to join the party, clamoring to shout along the lyrics with drinks clutched in their hands.

In between playing shows, downing pints and winning over critics, core members Matt Krahula (vocals, guitar, ukulele) and Seth Faulk (drums, vocals) managed to find time to write and record a follow up to their 2009 debut Call The Cops! The new album, Last Goodbye, offers up standouts such as “Mary.” A demo of that song was nominated for an Independent Music Award for best Alt-Country song of 2010. The full version combines all of the ingredients of The Nightmare River Band’s potent blend: foot-stomping rhythms, full arrangements, and a harmonious chorus that everyone can sing along to – even after consuming more than a few beers.

Record Highlight — Verse

Record Highlight — You Blew It!

You Blew It! might be one of the last great hold-outs in the emo revival that took over the last decade. More sane than Algernon Cadwallader, less sonically-spacious than Cap’n Jazz, YBI! cherrypicks from 90’s emo and indie in a fashion that many have aimed for but few have achieved. These cat-loving, taco-eating dudes have been holding it down in their native Orlando scene since February 2009. Since then, they’ve had enough lineup changes to see something like twelve members come and go all while completing four out-of-state tours and a few notable gigs with The Get Up Kids.

The brand new album from You Blew It!, Grow Up, Dude is the band’s debut full length. Featuring twelve new tracks, the first pressing is out of 500 and split between 75 clear w/ green splatter, 100 opaque green, 125 white, 200 Black.  Pre-order is up now with Topshelf Records!
