David First — Same Animal, Different Cages Vol. 2: Solomonos for Analog Synthesizer LP

Image of *Subscription: DAVID FIRST "Same Animal Different Cages" Vols. 1-4

About Same Animal, Different Cages:  “Sometime in the late winter of 2014 I began experiencing a certain nagging artistic malaise. I felt like I was spending too much energy on live performances and not being as creatively vital as I’d like. With that in mind, I resolved to cut some cords in the New Year and get back to the aspects of the process I’d been missing – learning new things and creating and recording new work. I also decided to challenge myself, without running roughshod, to not get bogged down in the ‘revising, editing and perfecting’ of things – always a potential pitfall in this digital age – and make ‘honest’, unmediated tracks that would directly reflect what I’d discover. Choosing an instrument a month, through a regimen of daily practice, I would develop and record material that would result in an album by month’s end.” – David First

The first four volumes in the series will include explorations on acoustic guitar, analog modular synthesizer, harmonica, and sitar.  Available as a subscription from Fabrica Records.

HEXA – Factory Photographs

HEXA is Lawrence English and Jamie Stewart. Factory Photographs is their soundtrack to David Lynch’s evocative exploration of the passing of the industrial age.

In 2015, Brisbane’s Gallery Of Modern Art presented David Lynch : Between Two Worlds, a major retrospective of Lynch’s works across painting, sculpture, installation and photography.

To celebrate the retrospective curator, José Da Silva ,with David Lynch and his studio developed a number of commissions in conjunction with the exhibition. One of these commissions was HEXA’s sonic response to David Lynch’s Factory Photographs.

When asked recently about his decades’ long interest in photographing factories in various states of disuse, David Lynch remarked “I grew up in the north-west of America where there are no factories at all, just woods and farms. But my mother was from Brooklyn, so when I was little we used to go there and I got a taste for a certain kind of architecture and a feeling for machines and smoke and fear. To me, the ideal factory location has no real nature, except winter-dead black trees and oil-soaked earth. Time disappears when I’m shooting in a factory, it’s really beautiful.”

Bazile Mills — Where We Are

wwacover.jpeg

Bazile Mills is an Indie/Alt band from Omaha, NE, formed in May of 2014. The name is a tribute to a time almost forgotten and the ghost town. The town of Bazile Mills was founded in 1882 after the first woolen mill in Nebraska was erected just north of town. Today there are only about 30 residents as the townspeople left after the mills closed. The group is based around songwriterDavid Mainelli and features versatile musicians around him. Tim Rozmajzl brings a gifted country/ blues lead guitar to the mix. Laura Streeter (former lead singer for Gauge) brings an array of instrumental talents and a powerful, moody/indie voice that combines with rhythm guitarist, Sam Vetter’s, unique voice as well. Dan Stein plays the bass and the lap steel guitar and Robb Clemens (formerly of Driven) brings plenty of band experience with the drums.

The band’s new EP – Where We Are – is available soon from Widmest Productions. Stay tuned!

Rocky Votolato / Noah Gundersen – Live On Lacquer Volume 1

Live On Lacquer Volume 1 cover art

Live On Lacquer preserves music in a way that is timeless and genuine. Much like the way records were made in the mid-20th century, these songs are captured live and cut in real-time onto lacquer discs with our 1940’s Scully vinyl lathe. Once cut, the lacquer masters are immediately sent off for plating and pressing. Each song is recorded in one take with no editing, allowing for the truest expression of the artist’s performance to be captured. The recording method used here is 100% analog and retains a level of humanity and imperfection often lost in modern digital productions.

The following equipment was used to make this record:
Microphones – Lawson 251, Royer 121, Coles 4038 (pair)
Preamps – Neve 1073
Compression – Empirical Labs EL8, Smart Research C2, FCS P3SME, Maselec MLA-3
Equalization – Squarewave Industries Net EQ and Stereo Width Control
Lathe – 1940’s Scully vinyl lathe with Westrex 3D-II Stereo cutter head and 1700 cutting amplifier
Record Press – Hamilton M-225 BX

Angela Perley & The Howlin’ Moons — Homemade Vision

APHMV-PressBooklet

Armed with electric guitars, swooning vocals, and songs that split the difference between rock & roll and dreamy psychedelia, Angela Perley & the Howlin’ Moons pack the biggest punch of their career with Homemade Vision.

Like the band’s debut, Hey Kid — an album whose kickoff track, “Athens,” earned Perley an International Songwriting Award in 2014 — Homemade Vision was recorded in the Howlin’ Moons’ hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Many of the songs were dreamt up somewhere along the highways and backroads that crisscross America, though, coaxed into life by a group of roots-rock road warriors who regularly play more than 100 shows a year. As a result, Homemade Vision is the sort of wide-ranging record that creates its own geography, building an imaginary place where the influences of David Gilmour, Tom Petty, Led Zeppelin, and Nebula all intersect.

It’s also the work of a genuine band. Chris Connor’s guitar playing — a flurry of fuzz, crunch, twang and bang — occupies just as large a role as Perley’s voice, while Billy Zehnal’s bass — coupled with cymbal crashes and snare hits from an arsenal of heavy-hitting drummers — glues the mix together. Inspired by love, heartbreak, and everything in between, Homemade Vision is a battle cry from a band that’s spent years fighting the good fight, carving out their own brand of atmospheric, aggressive Americana along the way.

Prairie Empire — The Salt

Prairie Empire is a Brooklyn-based band fronted by Brittain Ashford with Nim Ben-Reuvenon drums. The band will be touring this summer with the support of Jacki Paolella on bass, keyboard and vocals.

The first Prairie Empire album was released on Trailer Fire Records and recorded (unknowingly) in a Portland living room with the band Harlowe. Prior to that Brittain recorded a handful of things in her bedroom under her own name, most notably There, But For You, Go I, which was released on Paris-based Waterhouse Records.

When not writing for Prairie Empire Brittain performs with Dave Malloy‘s Ghost Quartet; she will head to Broadway in the fall with Malloy’s Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. Nim Ben-Reuven is a freelance art director & graphic artist and is a hand-lettering badass.

Their next album, The Salt, will be released on Commodore Trotter Records very soon!

Calliope Musicals — Time Owes You Nothing

Record Highlight — Darren Keen

He's Not Real cover art

Darren Keen has been performing for over ten years under the monikers The Show is the Rainbow, Touch People, and now his given name. His new album, He’s Not Real, continues to explore Footwork, Juke, Bass, and African polyrhythms, merging these various forms with the ease of a master producer and lifelong dance-music aficionado. Minimal in execution but complex in it’s composition and forward motion, He’s Not Real functions as thrilling club music while sitting on the edge of the avant-garde’s recent fascination with rhythm and deep bass.  Available from Orange Milk Records.

Graphic (HD035) cover art

Austin-based darkwave metal trio Troller is proud to announce their second LP, Graphic (out 4.8.16 on HOLODECK). The music video for “Not Here,” the first single off of the new LP, premiered on FACT Magazine recently. Despite the underground success of the critically acclaimed 2012 self-titled debut, Graphic manages to eclipse the broad appeal of the first record’s addictively ominous pop anthems. Troller’s focus on layered composition and biting sound design has resulted in a highly developed work that embodies the band’s unique raw form while raising the benchmark on fidelity and experimentation. Graphic arrives perfectly unhinged and hideously sophisticated, reinterpreting familiar elements from their debut LP, and propelling the trio’s provocative sensibilities explicitly further.

Holodeck is excited to announce its official 2016 SXSW showcase, which will take place at Lucky Lounge in Austin on Friday, March 18th. The lineup features heavy-hitting Holodeck artists, including Troller, SSLEEPERHOLD, Dylan Cameron, Samantha Glass, and Bill Converse, as well as New Orleans synth duo ((PRESSURES)). The night will be headlined by Inhalt, a Bay Area-based darkwave band.
