Happy Holidays!

ggr holiday

Wow, what a year 2015 has been.  Thank you to all customers, suppliers, and fans of vinyl for your support and patience throughout the year.  It’s been quite an eventful year — new vinyl colors, additional pressing capacity added, monthly pressing quantity records broken (twice), Generation Wax, and new faces joining the Gotta Groovie team and extended family.

We look forward to working with customers new and old in 2016 as we continue to expand our operation.  In the very near term, we will be doubling our record plating capabilities.  We hope that this will help to output test pressings in a faster manner next year, and it will also increase our flexibility when things go wrong with stampers while pressing.  We also anxiously await the launch of our very own new record pressing machine — the GrooveBuilt record press.  Stay tuned for new updates!

Check out our 2015 Holiday Specials here.   And, just for fun, check out our annual list of Employee Record Picks here.

Happy Holidays from all of the Gotta Groovies!

(Gotta Groove will be closed November 26 and November 27 for Thanksgiving)

Generation Wax

Thank you to everyone who attended this “historic” event at Gotta Groove Records last week.  For the first time in many decades, several lacquer engineers were in the same room with record platers, pressers, pvc manufacturers, blank lacquer disc manufacturers, and independent label/distributors to discuss the future of vinyl and how we can all work together to better serve our customers.  Stay tuned for future updates!

Record Highlight — Different Folk Records

Different Folk Records was founded this year in Sioux Falls/South Dakota by six friends whose goal is to release music that might not otherwise end up on vinyl. Diff Folk‘s first records were unveiled November 14th in Sioux Falls at a launch show featuring all five artists who appeared on the recordings. Diff Folk chose 7 inch vinyl for their first releases, with two splits featuring South Dakota-based musicians and a third with Minneapolis/Minnesota’s Jack Klatt on both sides. DF-7001 has The Union Grove Pickers’ “9 to 9” and Jami Lynn’s “The North Wind.” DF-7002 is comprised of Burlap Wolf King on Side A and Ryan Kickland on Side B. Klatt’s release is DF-7003.  Grab all three starting November 14.

Record Highlight — Superhuman Happiness

escape-velocity

Superhuman Happiness create music for a dance party inhabited by the emotionally complicated. Led by Stuart Bogie—a perpetually in-demand songwriter, arranger and performer whose resume includes stints with Arcade Fire, David Byrne, Iron & Wine, TV On The Radio and Antibalas—the Brooklyn-based ensemble construct instantly infectious and relentlessly rhythmic records that makes bodies move. Underlying the groove, however, are lyrical concepts that take a long look at the human condition. Their latest LP, Escape Velocity, is a seven-track effort that explores how human made technologies inversely shape our internal emotional landscapes. Songs like “VHS” and Super 8” merge broad influences like ‘80s dance pop and ‘70s prog, while lyrically examining how various media used in storytelling and communication impact how we see our own memories and derive a sense of meaning as people. The damaged art disco of “Date & Time” addresses the addictive aspects of social media with the refrain “we’re going nowhere clicking on those pretty pictures.” If this sounds overly heady, the album’s soaring vocal harmonies, celebratory handclaps, lush synths and crisp rhythms let it be known that joy and contemplation can be mutually inclusive.

In the writing and recording of Escape Velocity, Bogie and founding member Eric Biondo reconstructed the band to feature vocalist Andrea Diaz, whose vocal approach take the songs to new heights of expression. They also called upon old friends saxophonist Colin Stetson, violinist Sarah Neufeld and drummer Joe Russo to contribute. Once described as “physical cinematic dance rock,” Superhuman Happiness push the proclamation even further on these seven songs.  In physics, escape velocity is the speed at which the sum of an object’s kinetic energy and its gravitational potential energy is equal to zero. It is the speed needed to “break free” from the gravitational attraction of a massive body. Superhuman Happiness subscribe to the idea that music and art, when brought into our hearts, minds and bodies can provide human lives this same propulsive force.

Record Highlight — Murder Shoes

Murder Shoes — Sometimes, it really does boil down to who you know. Shortly after Derek Van Gieson first moved to Minneapolis, he met fellow guitarist Chris White through an ex-post-hardcore-punk pal. For a year or so, Derek and Chris stockpiled hundreds of songs. The songs ran the gamut of 60s pop/garage nuggets, gothic folk, chaotic post-punk, 80s funk and R&B, country/western, shoegaze, rockabilly, and surf. It could have been a real hot mess, but Derek brought Tess Weinberg in to the picture and she tied the whole thing together with her sultry cross-genre vocals. They further refined their sound as a trio and just when they thought they had it figured out, bassist Tim Heinlein and drummer Elliot Manthey brought the volume, power, and muscle.

Inside of a year as a quintet, Murder Shoes recorded and released three EPs, a full length album, and went on tour. After many adventures in the studio and live, the band has refined the eclectic nature of their sound, which can now accurately be described as “Murder Shoesy.”

Their debut full-length album — Daydreaming — streets November 6 via Land Ski Records.

Record Highlight — Melissa Ferrick

MelissaFerrick

Melissa Ferrick’s 12th original album is a coming home.  She has arrived in a place musically that is both familiar and new.  Melissa is a better writer, engineer, producer, and overall artist.  The self-titled album is, in many ways, a new beginning for Ferrick.  Written in just over a year, recorded at home, and released on her own relaunched label, Right On Records, Melissa Ferrick has given us a simple, eloquent, and honest acoustic album with an undeniable level of maturity. For long-time fans, this will be a welcome new arrival.  For those who are just discovering Ferrick, this is a superb way to be introduced. A completely solo effort in its process, creation, and release, Melissa Ferrick is marking the middle of her career with a perfect return to songwriting, and to herself.

Record Highlight — Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal

This is gonna be a party y’all. Do not miss the ‘Cooked Raw’ vinyl album release show on October 30th at Vega, in Lincoln, NE. Show starts at 9pm with A Ferocious Jungle Cat.

Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal bring an authentic soul, funk and R&B sound with a contemporary groove that is best experienced through their high-energy live performance. Hoyer’s honest lyrics, his soulful (sometimes in-your-face) vocals and a top-notch band, including a blazing horn section, definitely make this group worth a listen.  Cooked Raw was recorded live, in one take, direct-to-disc at Welcome to 1979 Studio in Nashville back in June. The album is available for pre-order via Silver Street Records. The official release date is November 6th, 2015, but you can grab a copy early at the release show.

Record Highlight — Submarine Lights

The debut album by Submarine Lights, produced by McKenzie Smith (Midlake, St. Vincent), began as an experiment in long-distance relationships, with songs variously written and recorded in Texas, Washington, DC, and New York City. Bringing together members of the The Chemistry Set, Polyphonic Spree, Calhoun, and St. Vincent, New York natives Stephen and Meredith Duncan layer soaring harmonies, subtle beats, liquid guitars, silvery strings, and memorable melodies into a collection of intimate and sometimes creepy moments.
