Record Highlight — John Kotchian & Kevin Pike

Shipped this week for Bocca Lupo Recordspulse/flow by jazz improv duo John Kotchian & Kevin Pike unfolds as an inspired, and at times impromptu, musical conversation between the artists.  The albums third track, “Birth of a Movement” serves as the perfect metaphor for the course charted by the album. A slow triumph of a song, the melodic interplay of Kotchian’s drums coax forth a gentle, at first bashful, saxophone. As the two instruments become more acquainted, a “birth” is made manifest in the rush of life and energy pounded forth in the pulse of drums and reed.  pulse/flow comes numbered in hand silkscreened jackets, featuring original art by New York painter and illustrator Lui Shtini.

Be sure to hit up the Bocca Lupo Records Showcase on December 20 at The Waiting Room Lounge in Omaha to see this duo, as well as two other Bocca Lupo artists.

Record Highlight — Made In Aurora Vol. 2

Made in Aurora is a series of collaborative album projects spotlighting the musicians and songwriters of Aurora, Illinois, and its surrounding area. By bringing area talent together and cultivating a stronger audience for local music, we hope to nourish our own communities and create an ever more fertile environment for the arts.

Made in Aurora is the brainchild of Steve Warrenfeltz, who spends a lot of time talking with area musicians in his record store, Kiss the Sky Records, in downtown Geneva, Illinois. Albums in the series are released in “dual format,” with both vinyl and CD included in one package.

Made in Aurora: Volume Two is a holiday album featuring both original music and new recordings of a number of seasonal favorites. Its 16 songs cover a wide variety of American musical styles including blues, country, pop and jazz. The album owes its genesis – and its City of Lights moniker – to songwriter Jeremy Keen, who independently produced three previous City of Lights holiday collaborations before Made in Aurora came to be. Over a cup of coffee last August, Jeremy suggested that the fourth City of Lights project should also be the second Made in Auroraproject. It just seemed right.

Volume Two was recorded, mixed and mastered in September 2011 by Kyle Schmidt at Backthird Audio in downtown Aurora. A total of 47 musicians contributed to the project, which was produced by Benjie Hughes. Lisa Gloria created our cover art from an idea by Steve Warrenfeltz and Dee Ciavarella, and Anna Hammond and Lisa Danielson both contributed to layout and design. We have an amazing team of volunteers to thank for all publicity. You’re probably reading this because of one of them.

The album will be released on November 25, 2011 – affectionately known as “Black Vinyl Friday” – exclusively at Kiss The Sky Records (301 W. State St., Geneva). A portion of the profits from this release will again be donated by Kiss The Sky to the Paul Ruby Foundation to support research on Parkinson’s disease.

Record Highlight — Glass Hits

Glass Hits was started in 2008 by Brian Willson, Jose Piza and Dave Beckhouse who were in a previous Denver band called Warsaw Surrenders. Greg Daniels was added to the band, they wrote and practiced for close to a full year before they found a vocalist. Eventually Keith Curts was added and Glass Hits was officially formed. They played their first show in May of 2009.

Over 300 pounds of rock shipped from the GGR shop floor to the band this week, so stay tuned to them to grab a copy as soon as they land in Denver!

Record Highlight — Hawthorne Heights

Hate is the new album from Hawthorne Heights, Part 1 in a series of 3 albums to be released.

The album, co-released on vinyl by American Dream Records and Cardboard Empire, includes an exclusive alternate version of “Wasted In NYC,” both on the record and with accompanied digital download. The American Dream versions include limited edition splatter, red, and white variants; and the band will be selling its own exclusive colors.

Included with each limited edition copy is a poster autographed by the band. In addition, each purchase of the limited edition variant will include a code to be used at a later date to gain access to an online acoustic performance and webchat with the band.

We were pumped when the band stopped in to pick up their color variants themselves….thanks guys!

Record Highlight — Best Coast

Back in our first year of operation, Group Tightener approached us with their very own inaugural 7″ release for the then-newly breaking artist Best Coast.  The record turned into our third 7″ project at the time, and eventually our first re-pressing project at the time (after only about 3 weeks, they sold out of the first pressing of 500 units; and it didn’t take them very long to sell out of the 500 record second pressing as well).

Well, after a couple years of working together, we were completely stoked when Group Tightener approached us about doing another re-pressing of this 7″ — but, this time, giving it true justice by cutting it at 45 rpm, making it a double gatefold 7″ package, and pressing it on color wax!  We are pumped to announce that these records have now shipped, and you can grab them while they last from Group Tightener direct and many indie retailers on yellow wax — or from a very select few indie retailers on ultra-limited CLEAR vinyl (only 200 copies were made on clear wax).

Design and photography for the deluxe gatefold 7″ jacket were done by Drew Heffron. Online purchases of the record will ship the week of November 15th, and the records will be available through indie retailers that same week.

Record Highlight — Renegade Lights

In the words of Raja Das, aka Raja The Resident Alien, musician and owner/operator of Renegade Lights Media, Renegade Lights #1 is the inception of a new era in electronic music. The label ignites its shine onto the world of electronic music for the first time with this originally defiant compilation of uniquely skilled artists. These beats were born to butcher bassbins and refuse to die, taking you on an intrepid journey through the fringes of all genres and beyond while still remaining cohesively engaging throughout. Through shine or shadow, this tasty double-wax album remains truly renegade.

Record Highlight — Goldmund

All Will Prosper, Keith Kenniff’s latest album under the Goldmund moniker, is a collection of 14 traditional Civil War-era folk songs and one contemporary track “Asoken Farewell.” Kenniff has always been a student of Civil War history and culture. From the Ken Burns documentary series on PBS to Bill Carothers’ solo piano album The Blues and The Greys, he has studied and enjoyed the music that tied friends and families together in a time when the nation was being torn apart.

Recorded over a period of 5 years in various houses in Massachusetts, Oregon, and North Carolina, Kenniff’s arrangements feel fresh and intimate, while retaining the wistful charms and timeless appeal of the originals. In part the album’s intimacy is created by his recording technique. With the top of the piano left completely open, microphones were placed close enough to capture the mechanical movement of the keys being pressed and the pedals squeaking. Similarly the acoustic guitar is close-mic’d, tracing the sounds of his fingers scraping and plucking the metal strings. The result creates a rich, almost hyper-real environment, where the tiniest details are magnified and brought to the surface.

More than capturing the pain, struggles, and loss associated with war, Kenniff’s arrangements shine with the hopefulness, and enduring strength and determination of individuals, and the nation as a whole, after the war. Despite the loss and obstacles that lie ahead, these are songs to accompany the healing and rebirth of a nation full of potential and moving forward.

Thanks to Western Vinyl, this album is available everywhere now!
