Vinyl Records 3.0 Challenges and Rewards

Official SXSW panel announcement!

What is the role of vinyl LP in current acts in the marketplace today? The purpose of this panel is to explain and show in depth the role of vinyl in the music marketplace. Panelists will discuss vinyl as the most important tangible music medium. Following explanations of why any band or artist should produce vinyl and which acts are more likely to benefit and why they will benefit from pressing vinyl, they will walk the artist through the process of production including options for customizations; including coloring, cutting, time expectancy, pricing, self-marketing, and selling at the independent retail level. The explanation of the edge that vinyl has over any other music medium in the marketplace today as well as the pros of producing vinyl in an mp3 dominated music medium era will be addressed.

If you are going to SXSW, be sure to hit it up!  There are also a couple of other panels covering various facets of making records.  Read more at sxsw.com.

Customer Highlight — The Mural and The Mint

The Mural and The Mint are dedicated to releasing all recordings for free in some format, because they believe that this is the only way for them to be heard as music. The name for the project came from the city of Philadelphia, home to more murals than any other city in the country, and to the Franklin Mint.

We were honored when Michael Kiley approached us to press the latest release by The Mural and The Mint, As The Eyes of The Seahorse on extremely limited white vinyl.  You can grab a copy at their shows, several of which are this coming weekend.

Customer Highlight — Aggrolites

Thank you so much to Alex Lalli and Young Cub Records for hiring GGR to press the brand new Aggrolites album — Rugged Road. You can pre-order the album now, and it streets on 02/22/11 (on limited edition red vinyl).  Perfect timing for some raw reggae beats to warm us all up during the freezing winter doldrums!

The Aggrolites are Jesse Wagner (vocals, lead guitar), Brian Dixon (rhythm guitar), Roger Rivas (organ), and Jeff Roffredo (bass).  Check them out at www.aggroreggae.com.

PS– there are still a few copies left of the Rugged Road 45’s (Trial and Error and Dreaming On Erie) too!

Customer Highlight — The Gary

The Gary are ringing in 2011 with a 6 song EP called El Camino. It was recorded in Chicago by Steve Albini and mastered by Bob Weston. With these gentlemen at the helm, you know it is sure to be a handsome document.

You can get a quick preview here, and then grab a copy from Cedar Fever Records.

Customer Highlight — All Dinosaurs

We had the pleasure of having Joe Willis and Dave Gibian of All Dinosaurs as our guests yesterday.  They came by to pick up their hot-off-the-press copies of their latest album, Paranoid Indiginous.

If you are in Cleveland on Feb 26, be sure to hit the LP release party at Beachland Ballroom (just announced)  w/ HotChaCha / Trigger Effect (montreal) / the Strutting Cocks.

Customer Highlight — Buried Beds

Phew! We finished pressing the brand new LP for Philly-based Buried Beds just in time for their extensive tour starting TONIGHT in DC, at the 9:30 Club.  They will be touring with Dr. Dog throughout the next couple of weeks, and then with Murder By Death through the end of March.  Check out a list of their tour dates here.

Formed as a warehouse duo in 2003 by old friends Eliza Jones and Brandon Beaver, “Buried Beds” grew over several years into a chamber group of banjos, string quartets, electric guitars, broken glass, and aching harmonies. Their Americana influenced melancholy won them “Best Band” in Philadelphia Magazine’s “Best of Philly 2004” issue and a spot on the Believer Magazine’s yearly music compilation. They went on to record the lush and beautiful “Empty Rooms” in 2005.

Be sure to grab a hot-off-the-press copy of this brand new album, Tremble The Sails!  On the album, Buried Beds trades delicate banjos for dueling guitars to create a landscape where love, death and your future-self throw a party. After recording drums and bass on the awesome tape machine at the Dr. Dog studio, the album was recorded almost entirely in their pajamas in Eliza’s living room. It was mixed by Nick Krill of The Spinto Band and came to life. The album is more alive than the first; maintaining a focus on careful arrangements but summoning the chaos and energy of Rock and Roll.

Customer Highlight — Shark?

We are extremely excited to announce that Oops Baby Records chose GGR to press their very first release —  the very first U.S.  7″ by the Brooklyn-based buzz band, Shark? !   The 7″ won’t be available for purchase for a couple of weeks, so stay tuned to the Oops Baby website for updates.

By their own definition, Shark? sounds like “the briny deep. Songs soaked in ocean mist. Business in the front, rows and rows of razor sharp teeth in the back. Vague and unsettling. Perpetual forward motion. Or death.”  You can judge for yourself by checking them out here.

Customer Highlight — Ultimate Fakebook

Thanks to Rocket Heart Records for enlisting GGR to press their Kickstarter-backed reissue of the seminal first album by Kansas rockers, Ultmate Fakebook.  The album, Electric Kissing Parties, is available as a limited edition black vinyl package, or an ultra-limited (only 100 copies) RED vinyl package.

You can grab one form Rocket Heart while supplies last!
