reformARTwest – For Sepp

Over the course of five decades, the legendary Austrian free jazz collective Reform Art Unit (and their oshoot groups) have collaborated with countless musicians, including Don Cherry, Carla Bley, Evan Parker, and Jim Pepper. Documented collaborations with free jazz notables include “Impressions” (Kovarik’s Musikothek, 1978) with Anthony Braxton and Cliord Thornton; “Subway Performances” (Granit, 1994) & “Illumination” (InRespect, 1995) with Sunny Murray; and “With Milo Fine” (Granit, 1999).  Milo Fine’s lengthy resume includes numerous records as leader of his own group (the Milo Fine Free Jazz Ensemble) as well as collaborations with Joe McPhee (“MFG in Minnesota”; Hat Hut, 1978, & “Old Eyes”; Hat Hut, 1979) and duo encounters with Derek Bailey (“Scale Points on the Fever Curve”; Emanem, 2003) and Anthony Braxton (“Shadow Company”; Emanem, 2004).

In May of 2015, Fine fullled a personal ambition by hosting the rst North American appearances of Reform Art Unit founding members Fritz Novotny and Sepp MItterbauer. Three nights of extraordinary and intimate concerts ensued at Minneapolis’ Studio Toile d’Angles. This limited edition LP was culled by Nero’s Neptune from over three hours of material, and consists of three pieces featuring two sextets and one nonet. Joining the core members of reformARTwest (Novotny: soprano sax/utes/percussion; Sepp Mitterbauer: trumpet/percussion; Milo Fine: drum set/Bösendorfer Imperial piano/clarinets) are Elaine Evans, Daniel Furuta, Benjamin J Mansavage Klein, Davu Seru, Charles Gillett and Paul Metzger. “For Sepp” is dedicated to the living memory of Sepp Mitterbauer, who died on December 9th of 2015.

Less than 250 copies of 300 pressed are for sale worldwide.

Johnny Gallagher — Six Day Hurricane

Recorded in a furious whirlwind in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Six Day Hurricane serves as an introductory snapshot to the wide variety of styles Johnny has been listening to for years. Under the inspired and subtle production of Thad DeBrock, a team of local musicians was assembled to bring Johnny’s songs—which had previously only been played solo – to life in full band arrangements.  Available soon from Rockwood Music Hall Recordings.

Young Mister — S/T

Young Mister is songwriter Steven Fiore, accompanied by a merry band of talented musicians across the southeast United States. As a songwriter, Fiore has spent many years building a fan base along both coasts, touring with Jay Clifford (Jump Little Children), Slow Runner, and even regularly performing with Jeff Goldblum’s jazz band in Los Angeles. After spending several years writing with Universal Music Publishing Group, Fiore is now shedding his skin and stretching into new musical territory as Young Mister with this self-titled, debut album.

Taking influence from classic rock bands like Electric Light Orchestra, Young Mister worked with producer Wolfgang Zimmerman (Brave Baby, The High Divers) to create an album that embodies the ethos of Americana while retaining the distinct, soulful sound that Fiore’s fans know and love.

Record Highlight — Alessandro Adriani

Alessandro Adriani has become a trusted source for all kinds of beyond-the-grave coldwave delights, from Maoupa Mazzochetti to The Neon Judgement.  Aside from his work in releasing forgotten gems and up to the minute synth incantations, Adriani has also been quietly issuing his own music. This has primarily taken the shape of Newclear Waves, having surfaced on split tapes and 7”s on Mannequin as well as an album on Desire back in 2012. Under his own name, production has been less forthcoming, although Adriani did pop up on Nico Fidenco’s 2015 album Zombi Holocaust with a remix of the track “The Magic Is In The Process”.

Now though it’s time for the Mannequin boss to delve back into the long player game with Montagne Trasparenti, via Monofonus Press. Adriani in fact collaborated with Willie Burns as Interbrain and delivered a track to the IXTAB compilationon the Austin, Texas-based label last year, but now he returns with nine tracks that further expand on his own interpretation of ghoulish body music.

Prairie Empire — The Salt

Prairie Empire is a Brooklyn-based band fronted by Brittain Ashford with Nim Ben-Reuvenon drums. The band will be touring this summer with the support of Jacki Paolella on bass, keyboard and vocals.

The first Prairie Empire album was released on Trailer Fire Records and recorded (unknowingly) in a Portland living room with the band Harlowe. Prior to that Brittain recorded a handful of things in her bedroom under her own name, most notably There, But For You, Go I, which was released on Paris-based Waterhouse Records.

When not writing for Prairie Empire Brittain performs with Dave Malloy‘s Ghost Quartet; she will head to Broadway in the fall with Malloy’s Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. Nim Ben-Reuven is a freelance art director & graphic artist and is a hand-lettering badass.

Their next album, The Salt, will be released on Commodore Trotter Records very soon!

The Gooch Palms — Introverted Extroverts

Picture

Newcastle, Australia via Los Angeles punk sweethearts The Gooch Palms have firmly planted their feet in American soil and have played over 150 shows across the USA and Canada to packed rooms and rave reviews since arriving in March 2015. They are fast becoming known as one of the most entertaining live bands in America, something audiences downunder have known for years!

Their debut album NOVO’S was released in 2013 on Australian label Anti Fade Records and has since been re-released on Burger Records in the USA.

Despite being extremely busy with touring in 2015 the duo still managed to squeeze in a recording session with producer Bill Skibbe (The Kills, Black Keys, Wild Belle, Protomartyr, Jacuzzi Boys) to work on their second album in Benton Harbour, MI.  Keeping true to their DIY ethos, the pair will be releasing their second album Introverted Extroverts very soon on their own label Summer Camp Records, and will continue the hard work with an extensive worldwide tour to follow.
