Strange Americans — Borrow You, Brother

It’s the kind of music that the Carhartt-wearing, hard-working, industrial beer-drinking, regular Americans would listen to — the ones who could end up on an episode of TV’s Dirty Jobs. It’s a little raw, a bit loud, unapologetic and honest. It’s Americana rock and roll and it’s something that Denver’s Strange Americans are crafting with both brawn and finesse, like a hot rod mechanic bringing back an old barn find.

In a sense, Strange Americans are rescuing something from the rust pile — straight-forward, no frills rock and roll, and a matching aesthetic that is heavy on songwriting and storytelling, but presented with reverb-drenched punch and passion — the way The Band or Crazy Horse would have done it.

Borrow You, Brother is the new full length album, available now —  recorded with Echo Lab engineer and producer Matt Pence (Centro-matic, Justin Townes Earle).

The Dollyrots — Whiplash Splash

Whiplash Splash is an assertive doubling down on the power pop hooks and punk rock flair issued by California duo The Dollyrots. Tracking much of the raw performances of this 6th studio effort themselves, the band once again enlists Producer John Fields to add polish to Kelly Ogden’s vocals and craft a radio-ready mix. The resulting 13 songs exude authenticity and shift between breakneck tempo changes (“Babbling Idiot”), extreme loud/soft dynamics (“Mermaid”) and bubblegummy melodic three-chord punk (“I Do”).

Recorded during singer/bassist Ogden’s pregnancy with her and guitarist Luis Cabezas’ second child, Whiplash Splash is The Dollyrots’ first studio LP since 2014’s Barefoot and Pregnant and follows two Top 20 peaks on Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart. Standout tracks include guest vocals by Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo (“Just Because I’m Blonde”), Jaret Reddick of Bowling For Soup (“Other Trucker”), and a modernized buzzsaw-guitar cover of Katrina and the Waves’ “Walking On Sunshine”. As a whole, the record fits sonically between any modern pop-punk and guitar goddess rock & roll… with a hint of Ronnie Spector.

Record Highlight — Darren Keen

He's Not Real cover art

Darren Keen has been performing for over ten years under the monikers The Show is the Rainbow, Touch People, and now his given name. His new album, He’s Not Real, continues to explore Footwork, Juke, Bass, and African polyrhythms, merging these various forms with the ease of a master producer and lifelong dance-music aficionado. Minimal in execution but complex in it’s composition and forward motion, He’s Not Real functions as thrilling club music while sitting on the edge of the avant-garde’s recent fascination with rhythm and deep bass.  Available from Orange Milk Records.

Graphic (HD035) cover art

Austin-based darkwave metal trio Troller is proud to announce their second LP, Graphic (out 4.8.16 on HOLODECK). The music video for “Not Here,” the first single off of the new LP, premiered on FACT Magazine recently. Despite the underground success of the critically acclaimed 2012 self-titled debut, Graphic manages to eclipse the broad appeal of the first record’s addictively ominous pop anthems. Troller’s focus on layered composition and biting sound design has resulted in a highly developed work that embodies the band’s unique raw form while raising the benchmark on fidelity and experimentation. Graphic arrives perfectly unhinged and hideously sophisticated, reinterpreting familiar elements from their debut LP, and propelling the trio’s provocative sensibilities explicitly further.

Holodeck is excited to announce its official 2016 SXSW showcase, which will take place at Lucky Lounge in Austin on Friday, March 18th. The lineup features heavy-hitting Holodeck artists, including Troller, SSLEEPERHOLD, Dylan Cameron, Samantha Glass, and Bill Converse, as well as New Orleans synth duo ((PRESSURES)). The night will be headlined by Inhalt, a Bay Area-based darkwave band.

Record Highlight — Rock Eupora

Clayton Waller, the Mississippi music artist known as Rock Eupora, started taking piano lessons at the age of 5. He quickly discovered his love for songwriting and performing and took advantage of nearly every opportunity to play music. In college, he helped form a rock-n-roll power trio called Wolf Cove. Wolf Cove started dissolving as graduation approached, and Waller began writing solo. These songs eventually became Rock Eupora and took form as the first album, Blanks.

While in grad school in Nashville, TN, Waller wrote and recorded Rock Eupora’s second full-length album in his apartment-converted basement. In Soon the Sun Will Come (available in February 2016), Waller uses galactic hooks and melodies and a unique blend of gritty rock and shimmering pop to address the power of time, the reality of love, and the importance of faith as he experiences a transitional stage of life. Waller and the Rock Eupora band currently reside in Nashville and frequently tour across the Southeast.

Record Highlight — Matthew Logan Vasquez

2015 (The Year of The Ram) has been a year of major change for Matthew Logan Vasquez. He moved with his wife, Marthe, from Brooklyn to Austin, he saw the birth of his first child Thor, and after a decade since founding his critically acclaimed band, Delta Spirit, he’s finally decided to go it alone FOR THE FIRST TIME, with his solo debut, The Austin EP, to be released November, 2015 , and a full length LP, Solicitor Returns, to shortly follow in early 2016 (it just shipped out from GGR this week).

Matt went solo for simple reasons– to return to the style of rock he loves. And when he went solo he REALLY went solo. He plays every instrument on the record, except for two drum tracks and one guitar track. Delta Spirit undoubtedly will be back but he wanted to make a collection of music without the influence of his beloved brethren (it’s only natural for a frontman to feel the need to let loose from time to time). You will hear his new material and you will hear Iggy Pop. Neil Young. Kurt Cobain. Gram Parsons. But ultimately, you’re hearing Matthew Logan Vasquez.

Customer Highlight — Figure Four

Coming soon from Blood & Ink Records (for the first time ever on vinyl) – Figure Four’s Suffering. You can pre-order any of the three limited edition vinyl colors now!

Figure Four still stand as one of the heaviest hardcore bands to ever come out of the Spirit-filled scene. Featuring members who would later form such fan favorites as Comeback Kid and Grave Maker, Figure Four were distinctly treading their own path with releases on Facedown Records and Solid State Records.

Customer Highlight — J Roddy Walston & The Business

It’s hard to think of a bigger musical swap than relocating your band from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Baltimore, Maryland. But in 2004, that’s exactly what J-Roddy Walston and the Business did. For the group–known for their infectious brand of no-frills Americana rock–it was quite the change. But since then, they’ve adjusted to their new locale and have garnered a reputation for their live shows, where they’ve been known to spontaneously break out into rowdy covers of Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls” [audience interaction required.] A few weeks before their SXSW 2010 performance, Spinner asked the band whether the nightly Southern-style goal of their live shows was to get crowds singing, dancing, and drinking. To which they answered: “Yes. Preferably all at the same time.”

Long in the making, we shipped a very limited run of vinyl of the band’s latest self-titled album.  We’re not really sure how you can pick one up, but if you can make it to one of their live shows, even if you can’t grab a copy of the album, we’re sure you will have a good time.

Customer Highlight — The Gary

The Gary are ringing in 2011 with a 6 song EP called El Camino. It was recorded in Chicago by Steve Albini and mastered by Bob Weston. With these gentlemen at the helm, you know it is sure to be a handsome document.

You can get a quick preview here, and then grab a copy from Cedar Fever Records.
