Record Highlight — Person L / Weatherbox

It’s been rumored since 2008, and now, it finally exists: Philadelphia’s Person L and San Diego’s Weatherbox each contribute two brand new tracks to this split EP. This release showcases Kenneth Vasoli and Brian Warren as true masters of their craft, in a constant game of post-punk one-upmanship. Essential listening that is worth the wait.

TRACKLISTING
A1: Person L – OK
A2: Person L – Winter Clothes
B1: Weatherbox – Kickflips For Weeks
B2: Weatherbox – Two Seductresses

All of the blue and black copies are sold out, so only orange copies remain (and not very many) — hit up Youth Conspiracy Records to grab one!

Record Highlight — Sound Ceremony

“We bring to your attention, an invitation to the bizarre.” So goes the final song on Canadian born guitarist and songwriter Ron Warren Ganderton 1979 LP with his group Sound Ceremony. Ganderton self-released three LPs with the band while living in the United Kingdom during the 1970s and 80s. First came “Guitar Star” (1973), then “Sound Ceremony” (1979) and finally “Precious As England” (1981). Despite some modest distribution and frequent gigs, the band never seemed to really take off and Ganderton eventually returned to his native Vancouver (where he still resides), leaving hundreds of unsold records in the attic of his house. While these copies seem to have been lost to the ravages of time, One Kind Favor will now reissue the second Sound Ceremony LP. All of the group’s efforts are undeniably unique, but their middle record is the true brain-damaged winner of the bunch. The record surely fits somewhere into the UK punk explosion of the day, but it’s also looks back to the mid-sixties rock that Ron cut his teeth on and ahead to some sort of maniac future form of entertainment that perhaps has not been invented yet. Ganderton’s mildly “out of it” stream of consciousness lyrics show a clear lack of self-censorship and that’s really one of the albums strongest assets. He has created this character of himself as a huge rock star and a sex symbol, and who are we to deny his claims? The band chugs along amiably as Ganderton covers such terrain as his beating heart (it’s made of rock), his distaste for education (he’d prefer to teach a lesson in bed) and his electric brain (which happens to be insane). If you’ve never heard a singer do a count-off all the way up to seventeen, then now is your big chance! Features what is perhaps the greatest anti-cigarette song of all time.

Record Highlight — Kenneth Higney

Often considered the Holy Grail of “real people” records, Kenneth Higney‘s Attic Demonstration was never actually intended to be an official release. It was recorded in New York City by Higney and his accompanist Gordon Gaines (R.I.P.) as a vehicle with which to sell Higney’s songs to other artists and was only pressed to vinyl in 1976 when he grew tired of duplicating cassette tapes. Apparently the Jandekian dissonance of the “A. Demo.” sound was an unintended by-product of the one take demo sessions. Be that as it may, “Attic Demonstration” is a strange sonic world all of it’s own. It is neither too weird to be unappealing to “regular” music listeners nor is it one of those “discoveries” that leaves you wondering what all the hype was about. Acoustic guitar ballads of nearly atonal desolation mix readily with rock ‘n’ roll numbers featuring hiccuping drums and alien sounding electric guitar. Higney’s vocals are by turns sneering and mournful as he sings about lost love and the desire for fame all filtered through his uniquely bent worldview. Although a few ads were placed for the record in The Village Voice and The Aquarian, the fame that Higney sought eluded him (a semi-positive review in Trouser Press notwithstanding). That is, until the album was discovered and distributed by record dealer Paul Major. Attic Demonstration has been featured in the Acid Archives and copies of the original LP have soared in price over the years, but you no longer have to pay $100, $200 or even $300 to obtain a copy of this monumental album on vinyl. One Kind Favor and Kenneth Higney have teamed up to bring you an official reissue of Attic Demonstration remastered, with all the original artwork and with liner notes by the artist.

Record Highlight — Gypsy

This record was a long time in the making. Finally seeing the light of day is the debut full length from GYPSYGiant’s Despair is 10 tracks that have been well worth the wait. Sounding even more now like Knapsack, Jawbeaker and Dinosaur Jr than on their previous 7″ (now only available as a download), the LP features top notch production from Will Yip (Blacklisted, Mother Of Mercy, War Hungry). Oh and they feature members of Cold World, Mother Of Mercy, Stick Together, and the dude who books United Blood, if you’re into that sort of thing.

The LP is available for pre-order now from Six Feet Under, and was pressed on three limited edition colors which are sold on a first-come-first-served basis.

Record Highlight — The Anchor Windlass

The Anchor Windlass formed in Minneapolis in the fall of 2009 with Anton, Danger, Gabe, and Max Peters.  In the summer of 2010 Max left the band and Minneapolis to live in a town with a much worse music scene, but better lakes and school systems.  Shortly thereafter, Nick Johnson was recruited to play lead guitar and tell us on what gear to buy.  Since then The Anchor Windlass has played a whole slew of gigs around the Twin Cities with a whole host of really rad local bands.

Thanks to the guys for hiring GGR to press the band’s debut LP, Fair Winds and Following Seas — we just shipped them out this week, so be sure to stay tuned to the band to grab a copy.

Record Highlight — Delay

Delay are midwest rockers from Cleveland, Ohio.  We were pumped when Shout Out Loud Prints and Ryan Eilbeck from the band contacted us about pressing their new LP, Rushing Ceremony.

The official release party is January 21, and you can catch their release show at Carabar in Columbus, Ohio with Annabel, The Dopamines, and Tin Armor.  But, be sure to pre-order the LP from Shout Out Loud Prints now — pre-orders begin shipping January 18!

Sleepless Issue #0 – Out Now

GGR is proud to be a sponsor of the new Sleepless zine!  Sleepless focuses on heavy underground music from the Rust Belt, and is made by people who play in bands and who have been involved in the creative arts all their lives. This is a place to document, share, and collaborate: send articles, show and record reviews, photos, and comics to us and we’ll try and get it into the print zine and also onto the online version of it (coming soon!).

Sleepless does take subscriptions, which are $20 per year or $6 per issue. You’ll get a hard copy of the zine plus a free tape comp in the mail.  You can also grab it at various regional record stores and venues.  If you are a fan of heavy underground music, we highly recommend checking out this new publication!

Record Highlight — Bryter Layter

Comprised of Joseph Raglani (Kranky) and Mike Pollard (Arbor), Bryter Layter is a collaborative unit that focuses on the lyrical faculties of analog synthesis. For the most part, these recordings find the pair eschewing the at-times unfocused, long-form drone techniques that have become fixtures in the scene in favor of short, melodic compositions that are strikingly rich in detail. Listeners familiar with the oeuvres of Raglani and Pollard will find much to love here. As the pillow-soft, analog tone-clouds that characterize the latter’s work as Pale Blue Sky find themselves wed to the highly structured, dynamic arrangements that one associates with the former’s solo output.”Two Lenses” is rich and cinematic, rife with evocative motifs which ebb and flow from one piece to the next creating, over the course of the album, a masterfully composed, unified whole.

Recorded live and meticulously arranged by Raglani at his home studio, and mastered by Greg Davis to supreme effect, Two Lenses (released by Students of Decay) builds upon and extends the qualities established on the pair’s 2009 cassette release “Imprinted Season” in every way. Their work here runs the gamut from maudlin and picturesque to profoundly hopeful always with an eye towards the beautiful.

Record Highlight — Algernon Cadwallader

Algernon Cadwallader is Tank Bergman, Peter Helmis, and Joe Reinhart — three friends from Philadelphia that grew up playing loud, sloppy, fun music. They have all played together in different bands, with different people, but this lineup seems to stick. They like to do things themselves. Pete makes the t-shirt designs. They print all the shirts in their warehouse. Joe records and mixes all the music in his studio. They book our own tours. Tank likes drums. The best way to get in touch with them about playing (they love to play) is emailing them.

We pressed their new Parrot Files LP last month, and they already sold out of the first pressing!  Not to worry though, we’ll be pressing up another 1,000 LP’s early in the New Year, so be sure to hit them up if you haven’t grabbed one yet.

Record Highlight — The Graduate

The Graduate‘s Horror Show is their first EP, and first release ever.  The record was written and recorded in just 3 short months, and it features the first 6 songs the band ever wrote including early versions of “Sit & Sink” and “Justified” (which later appeared on Anhedonia). After much demand, the record is finally available on vinyl for the first time!

This pressing was limited to 250, and is available directly from the band now through January 15, 2012!
