Record Highlight — Meat Puppets

We were pumped to be invited to work with the band on their reissue of this 1984 masterpiece – The Meat PuppetsII.  This reissue is cut at half-speed for maximum fidelity and pressed on 180 gram wax!  When originally released, II was a 180-degree departure from its predecessor, confusing old fans and creating new ones. Kurt Loder gave it a four-star review in Rolling Stone, calling it “one of the funniest and most enjoyable albums of 1984”, while a bewildered Robert Hilburn proclaimed the Puppets “far more of an acquired promising though willfully unfocused rock act” in the Los Angeles Times.  In addition to the vinyl, each package features a download code with seven bonus tracks!  (Street date is 03.06.12).

BTW – did you know The Meat Puppets still tour?  Check it out!

Record Highlight — Magic Box

The story of Magic Box:

Ed Anderson and Scott Tipping have been making music and mayhem together since the late ’90s, when they hosted an open mic featuring drunken jazz artists, angry poets and puppeteers.

Ed moved on to found roots rock trio Backyard Tire Fire in 2001. Through the 2000s, the band toured relentlessly, recording 5 albums and 2 EPs.

Scott went on to become a mainstay of the Chicago music scene, playing and touring with bands like Mighty Blue Kings, Peter Himmelman, The Steak House Mints and Dayna Malow.

Their paths crossed again in 2008 when Ed asked Scott to join Backyard Tire Fire on tour to round out the band’s sound. BTF’s album Good To Be, produced by Steve Berlin, saw them touring the country, headlining shows and opening for the likes of Los Lobos, Buddy Guy, ZZ Top and Cracker.

In back alleys, dank hotel rooms and a van that at least once tried to kill its masters, a new music partnership was formed, and when Backyard Tire Fire decided to take a break from touring, Scott and Ed chose to bring together some of their favorite Chicago musicians to work on new songs: Steve Gillis (drums), Scott Stevenson (keys and vocals) and Matt Thompson (bass).

The new project features songs by both Ed and Scott, staying true to the rock-and-roll tradition of BTF while transitioning into a more dynamic, harmony-oriented sound.

Record Highlight — Chuck Prophet

On Februrary 7th, Chuck Prophet returns with Temple Beautiful – a nuanced, insightful, passionate ode to San Francisco: his adopted hometown; his muse; his drug of choice…

San Francisco. It’s a great place to come and wave your freak flag or whatever you want to call it. It can suck you under. That first hit. It really does a whammy to you. And if you’re like me you can find yourself chasing the San Francisco dragon for the rest of your life. That’s what the record is about.

The record’s an unsentimental (though loving) tour of San Francisco. Made in San Francisco by San Franciscans about San Francisco. My effort to tap into the history, the weirdness, the energy and spontaneity that brought me here in the first place.” ~ Chuck Prophet

Record Highlight — The Marble Vanity

The Marble Vanity‘s “You Can’t Step On A Rainbow” 7″ single streets January 31 on Slow Fizz Records

What you see is only natural. After punishing ears for years as CoCoComa, Bill and Lisa Roe spent the last few years building Trouble in Mind Records and putting out enough hit singles to fill a candy jukebox. Goes without saying all these contact highs awakened a few demons. They found themselves playing with kites and launching yellow balloons into the sky towards Sagittarius and soon enough Andrew from The Hipshakes jumped across the pond and found himself going from every other weekend to full custody and The Marble Vanity was a band, man. Soon Emma from Hollows turned up with a harpsichord in one hand and a flute in the other to add a bit of sparkle, Josh Berman dropped by for tea with his cornet to add a little class and then there was this monkey and he had some total Owsley shit – super kind.
