Record Highlight — Cadence Weapon

Cadence Weapon continues to firmly establish his legacy as a sonic pioneer while constantly pushing the rap and electronic music envelope. Following his critically-acclaimed, Polaris Music Prize-nominated albums Breaking Kayfabe and Afterparty Babies and a two year term as Edmonton’s Poet Laureate, he returns with his new album – Hope In Dirt City. A clearly defined and emotionally mature statement of intent, Hope In Dirt City represents the culmination of his experiences.  Composed of a unique hybrid of psychedelic soul, old school rap, and mutant disco, Hope In Dirt City is a groundbreaking achievement in hip-hop.

Thanks to Cadence Weapon for dropping by GGR on Friday before his show at the Grog Shop!  Be sure to catch him on tour this summer!

Record Highlight — Nothington

After releasing two albums with the esteemed folks from BYO Records, Nothington has branched out and joined the Red Scare family for their third and undoubtedly best full length.  Proving again that two songwriters are always better than one, Red Scare really lucked out with this signing and we’re sure that listeners will agree. The young SF band started out by blending influences like Leatherface and Social Distortion, and they’ve truly perfected their own sound on Borrowed Time.

Record Highlight – The Marble Vanity

On June 19 the lush pop sounds first popularized by hitmakers like the Zombies and the The Left Banke came careening back into the spotlight of today’s “all scuzz, all the time” music scene with the release of the debut LP by The Marble Vanity via Chicago’s Slow Fizz Records. Comprised of members of Cococoma, The Hipshakes (UK) and Hollows, this self-titled 12-inch 33⅓ RPM microgroove platter is acid-soaked pop perfection. Influences found here tend to be more along the lines of late ’60s/early ’70s pop wunderkinds like (the first) Nirvana and Sagitarius with their dense, layered mindbending compositions rather than just another stripped-down Back From the Grave rip-off.

The Marble Vanity’s S/T debut is available in the finest independent record stores across the nation, as well as through the usual online music emporiums.

Record Highlight — Melanie

…Yes, the same Melanie that graced the original 1969 Woodstock stage as-a virtual unknown, but emerged as one of Rock’s legendary singer-songwriter-storyteller! Over 40 years later…40-some records later…and over 80 million in record-sales later, Melanie is still doing her-thing on her latest album – Ever Since I You Never Heard Of Me.  This autographed very-limited-pressing of Melanie’s “Grape” record is available (while supplies last) via Melanie’s official store.

Record Highlight — Cinchel

Imagine guitar processed beyond recognition into something that occupies space in a way that fills and consumes, taking it over. Cascading drones fulfill like a metallurgist’s hammer and anvil in the dark echoes of a coal miner’s cave. A patient slow-pan exploration of the interior architecture of an elaborate temple, followed by a burning ecstatic ascent, ending with trails of embers left in your wake.  This is Cinchel – Stereo Stasis.

Record Highlight — One-Eyed Doll

Described as Strawberry Shortcake meets Gwar and Valentine’s Day meets Halloween with the visual impact of Japanese Anime, One-Eyed Doll is an award-winning Austin, Texas power rock duo with a loyal global fan base and extensive international press exposure. In 2009, 2010 2011 the group swept the SXSW Music Awards in categories such as Best Punk Band, Best Metal Band, Best Goth Band, Best New Band, Best Acoustic Guitarist, Best Electric Guitarist, Best Producer, Best Drummer, Best Songwriter, Best Female Vocalist and more. The group has independently released three full-length albums, appears in Revolver, Guitar World and Guitar Player magazines and has left several national tours in its wake including major anime conventions (DragonCon, AniMix, IKKiCON, Anime Overload, ShadoCon, etc.) Blazing the band’s wildfire buzz amongst their growing legions of religiously crazed fans is One-Eyed Doll’s cult leader: the impossible-not-to-love Kimberly Freeman, whose punishment is so sweet you’ll beg for more.  Reserve one of the 1,000 first edition records today!

Record Highlight — mewithoutYou

mewithoutYou returns with their 5th studio album, Ten Stories. Helmed by producer Daniel Smith (Sufjan Stevens) and mixed by Brad Wood (Smashing Pumpkins), Ten Stories is an allegorical collection of songs that, at first listen, follows a winding narrative about a circus train crash in 19th century Montana. Long time fans will know that although we are introduced to a talking elephant, fox and tiger there is always more than meets the eye.

Available on charcoal/smoke colored wax everywhere tomorrow (06.12.12).

Record Highlight — Telestrion

Thanks to Telestrion for hiring GGR to press their self-titled first album and Molecule EP on wax for the first time ever!  Both are pressed on an array of limited edition colors to go with the deluxe psychedelic full color artwork.  The albums feature heavy original tracks and some amazing Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd covers.  To stoner rock fans everywhere – if you don’t buy any other vinyl this summer, definitely grab these two records while you can (both are limited to 300 copies).

An Impromptu Visit From Jonathan Richman

Jonathan Richman was kind enough to stop by GGR yesterday while in Cleveland – a gracious guest indeed!  Thanks for stopping by!

Record Highlight — Jukebox The Ghost

Jukebox the Ghost is back with Safe Travels, the follow-up album to their 2010 breakout Everything Under the Sun. After two solid years of touring including shows at Lollapalooza and a stop at Late Night with David Letterman, Ben, Tommy and Jesse are back with 13 new, original tracks that the Washington Post describe as “rambunctious pop music with the compact melodicism of the Beatles, the ambitious prog sprawl of Yes, and the persistent dance motion of New Order.” Safe Travels will be available in stores starting June 12th, and is available for pre-order now!
