Record Highlight — Mike Coykendall

Portland, Oregon-based songwriter, performer and producer Mike Coykendall‘s new record, Chasing Away The Dots, is the latest in a long and winding musical journey that has taken him from the rural farmlands of Kansas to television and concert stages around the world. If integrity, experience and artistry still count for anything, this record will be his most well-received to date. Over the years, Coykendall has been critically acclaimed as a musician, engineer and producer for his work with well-known artists such as M. Ward, She & Him, Blitzen Trapper, Bright Eyes, the Old Joe Clarks, Tin Hat, Sallie Ford, Richmond Fontaine and Jolie Holland, to name but a few.

The sounds contained within the grooves of Chasing Away The Dots range from earnest to irreverent, wistful to scorching, direct to oblique, always with an underpinning of subtle psychedelia. The mood lifts and falls while Coykendall’s distinctly American voice casually narrates the whole affair. Lyrically, the album takes on such universal subjects as loss, love, alienation, separation, longing, aging, infatuation, kindness, and other human conditions. These themes emerge, filtered through the eyes and ears of someone who has bee around long enough to live through it, and return, several times over–a man who knows that the sun will rise, and so will the moon.

Black Swamp Arts Festival

It’s that time of year again – the annual end-of-summer Black Swamp Arts Festival in Bowling Green, Ohio of which we at GGR are huge fans.  Thanks again this year to Kelly of Grounds For Thought for having us press a new LP which will be available at the fest — Four Nights In February.

Record Highlight — Footwork/Bully

Space noised out, fast, chiming and charming sounds from Seattle. Bully is the Debut 7″ from Footwork. Three songs. 6 minutes. Each one noisy
and ripping.  Available for pre-order now, on limited mountain-dew yellow colored wax courtesy of Talking Helps Records.

Record Highlight — dgelting

The following commentary is by no means a scholarly review of dgeltingVolume 1; rather, it is an analysis consisting of both subjective and objective observations derived from frequent pleasurable listenings. It is an album that, upon first impression, may be perceived as an ambient alternative to albums such as Radiohead’s Kid A and Hovercraft’s Schema. However, once passed the realm of passive listening, the inherent depth of the album is keenly noted. The 80 minutes of music propels the listener into a seemingly subtle lapse in time, as it is an album that is effortlessly played in its entirety.

Record Highlight — Old Hundred

Old Hundred is pleased to announce the release of their second full-length album ‘Time in the Wild’. The record will be released on Labor Day weekend with shows on Friday, August 31 and Saturday, September 1 at the Kobo Bar in Columbus, Ohio.

Paste Magazine named Old Hundred one of the “10 Ohio Bands You Should Listen to Now” in April of 2012. In May, the band performed at the Nelsonville Music Festival alongside Iron & Wine, Andrew Bird, and M. Ward. They will perform this September at the Midpoint Music Festival featuring Grizzly Bear, Dirty Projectors, and more. They were also selected as the “Best Local Band of 2010” by Columbus Underground voters. They have also opened for Mumford and Sons, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Dawes, Phosphorescent, Horse Feathers, and many more.

‘Time in the Wild’ is being released with help from Wide-Eyed Records, a Columbus-based music collective and label. The record was recorded at 3 Elliot Studios in Athens, Ohio and was mastered by Jeff Lipton at Peerless Mastering. You can grab the record at the Labor Day Weekend release shows, or from the band now!

Record Highlight — Hubble

The first release from Britton Powell’s new label venture, The Company, is the Mingle 7inch by Hubble.

Since the inception of Hubble, Ben Greenberg of Zs and Pygmy Shrews has sought to exploit the guitar for its ulterior qualities, simultaneously displaying a true love for the instrument while redefining how guitar music is understood. Whether distortion-drenched or clean, Ben describes painstaking result as “cyber-dread”, an apocalyptic, beat-less quasi-electronic music, conjuring Terry Riley’s pulsing minimalist structures and Gregg Ginn’s aggressive, avant-garde rock.

You can see Hubble play at Hopscotch if you are attending.

GGR 3-year Anniversary

Today (08.28.12) marks our 3-year anniversary!  Wow, what a crazy ride it has been.  We owe where we are now today to you – our loyal customers – and for that, we sincerely thank you for your ongoing business.

Three years ago, after months of planning, relocating, infrastructure building, infrastructure rebuilding, long days and nights of experimenting, learning, consulting…we finally squeaked out our first pressed records on August 28, 2009.  Most were barely playable.  In fact, it took over two weeks on one machine to finish our very first record order of 100 units.  Thanks to you, we now press thousands of records almost every day (and we are happy to say that they are indeed playable – and in our humble opinion, typically sound pretty great!)

In an ongoing effort to better serve you, we added a full second shift on July 31, and are in the process of adding additional machines to our operation.  None of this would be possible without your continued loyal business, and we look forward to growing with you well into the future.

Record Highlight — Arms

ARMS is what happens when the back burner bursts into flame. A one-time side project transformed into a full band, ARMS synthesizes Todd Goldstein’s years of bedroom experimentation and sharpens them into a single bright blade. ARMS’ full-band debut, Summer Skills, explodes the lo-fi pop of 2008’s Kids Aflame into a widescreen epic, telling a fractured tale of love under supernatural circumstances. Sonically generous and emotionally raw, ARMS’ Summer Skills lures listeners like a siren song and then pulls them into the deep.

Record Highlight — Lymbyc Systym

Playing music together for over 20 years has given the Bell brothers plenty of time to learn how to build off of one another’s strengths as they write, record, and tour. During the three years Michael and Jared spent writing and recording their new album Symbolyst, they spent more time apart than they ever had. After several years of steady touring in support of two full-length releases and an ep with This Will Destroy You, the brothers found themselves on opposite sides of the globe, with Michael living in Japan and Jared studying graphic design in Brooklyn. The geographic distance led them to rely more than ever on the trust they’ve developed over the years they’ve spent creating together.

Symbolyst, Lymbyc Systym’s debut with Western Vinyl, draws on the band’s eclectic pool of influences–The Jackon 5’s funk, Jung’s dream theory, Bergman’s existentialism, Baudelaire’s prose, and Wright’s organic architecture. The distinctly catchy melodies and head-bobbing rhythms are immediately inviting, while the densely layered polyrhythms, harmonies, and countermelodies reveal themselves over multiple listens, making for an incredibly rewarding experience no matter how many times you’ve heard the album.

The album’s title, Symbolyst, refers to the late 19th century movement in visual art, literature, theater and music. Much like the Symbolists, Lymbyc’s music evokes ideas, feelings, and experiences, rather than explicitly stating anything about them. The resulting songs tell stories without words, using a musical vocabulary to construct landscapes of universal joy and dread…disappointment and optimism.
