Customer Highlight — Centro-Matic

Thanks to the Undertow Music Collective for hitting us up for the new Centro-Matic record, Candidate Waltz.

This is Centro-matic’s 10th full length offering; and it is mixed, mastered, and scheduled for release on June 21.  Scott Solter helped out with these recordings, and Christian Helms and Erick Montes (Helms Workshop) provided the art direction and layout.  All LPs come with a download card inserted inside the package with a code to download 320k MP3s.  The LP was mastered direct from hi-res 24/96 files by Jeff Powell at Ardent Studios in Memphis using the same cutting lathe used for many of the classic Stax Records releases on the 60’s and 70’s!  Available at indie stores everywhere on June 21!

Customer Highlight — Greg Brown

Greg Brown, accomplished songwriter, co-founder of the influential indie roots label Red House and former musical director for Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion radio program, is a prolific songwriter…and it’s a good thing. As the result of a fateful lighting strike on the studio where he was working, Brown lost the recordings that were to comprise his next album. For most artists, losing that much material would have been a creatively scarring and demoralizing experience. For Greg, it was just an excuse to turn inward once again, and write more songs.

Of the songs that came to comprise his 24th album Freak Flag, the title track is all that remains of that ill-fated lost original album. Greg wrote ten new songs, moving on to record them at Memphis, Tennessee’s legendary Ardent Studios. This time there were no storms, but creative lightning did strike again, resulting in what many have called Greg’s best album. Like a jagged stone worked by ocean waves, Brown’s signature rough hewn-yet-velvet-smooth baritone is in fine form on Freak Flag. Produced by Bo Ramsey, the album also includes a cover of Brown’s wife Iris Dement’s “Let the Mystery Be” and Brown’s daughter Pieta’s song “Remember the Sun.”  Available at indie stores everywhere now!

Customer Highlight — Kindest Lines

Covered in Dust the debut LP from Louisiana’s Kindest Lines, opens suitably with a beat that sounds a lot like like an industrial rendition of The Ronettes’ ‘Be My Baby’. Brian Wilson cited that song by the legendary New York girl group as the greatest pop recording ever, and many refer to it as the perfect example of Phil Spector’s “wall of sound” production. Those artists established many of the templates for how modern music is made, but what still stands out is the sense of that music having been simply dreamed-up. With organic washes of layered melodic guitars and lush songcraft, this New Orleans-based trio is definitely doing some dreaming of their own. Kindest Lines are blazing a unique path into an enchanting realm of darkened electronic indie pop that is at once welcoming and foreboding.

Produced by cerebral electro-experimentalists Alfredo Nogueira and Josh Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv, yet brimming with spacey guitar work and hooks aplenty, Covered in Dust is a record that thrives on harmonious disparities while maintaining all of its thematic and sonic cohesion.

You can purchase a copy for yourself from Wierd Records on June 15, 2011.

Customer Highlight — Lüüp

Foregoing traditional genre boundaries, defying categorization, and embracing the distinct talents of its 19 participants, Luup involves a reexamination of convention by a thorough exploration of the instrument. Led by flautist Stelios Romaliadis, whose direction of the musicians allows for shimmering folk tendencies to mingle with fragile string arrangements and uplifting voice, Luup combines disparate elements of modern musical tendencies to examine man’s primitive nature. Meadow Rituals presents 8 paeans to unite man’s overwhelming distance from nature and self and a celebration of the reunion. Lilting melodies mix with ambient and new age directions; propulsive swells of strings and effervescent electronics make way for profound vocal harmonies to create a universal and timeless experience.

Customer Highlight — Frank & Jesse

Frank & Jesse plays music that is reflective of both who they are as people and the lives they lead. Formed by old friends in the winter of 2009, the band quickly gained prominence in their hometown of Toledo, OH as a must-see act. They take pride in all of their roots, both musically and culturally, and play every show with the tried and true attitude that it might be their last. Honest as hell and not afraid to turn every amp up to 10, they are a down and out, pure and simple, rock’n’roll band.

With their first album, Let it Come Down, Frank & Jesse gives us 10 songs that span all of the band’s musicality. Charging rockers like “Albuquerque” and “Breakdown,” slower ballads such as “Out of Touch” and “Take my Time” and even a bit of country – in the shape of “Baton Rouge” – blend seamlessly as a coherent and unified piece. These songs were born out of a place familiar to anyone who has lived in the American Midwest. It is rust belt romance music, sung by those who know it well.

Let It Come Down has been slaved over for more than a year. As Frank & Jesse rapidly approach the release of the culmination of their hard work, a decision has been made to release these songs in the tradition as timeless and valued as the rock music these gentlemen play – vinyl.

You can preview the album online, or catch the band live to grab a copy of this wax for yourself!

Customer Highlight — Cemetery Urn

Out now from Hells Headbangers on 180gram vinyl in a glossy gatefold cover with large 18×24 poster!

The second full-length Cemetery Urn album maintains their self-proclaimed style of “Australia Barbaric Death Metal,” yet displays a refinement in the bands style & production techniques while steering well clear of the modern overproduced sound of today. Damon Bloodstorm formerly of war metal legends Bestial Warlust leads the assault with undoubtedly the best vokills of his long career. Andrew Gillon lays down a brutal onslaught of guitars with lead work that is at times moody & epic, before launching into the faster almost shredding style displayed on later Abominator albums. “The Conquered Are Burned” evokes the primacy of early 90’s Death Metal without entirely adhering to the trends of Incantation and Swedish Death Metal worship like the majority of today.

The New Face of Vinyl: Youth’s Digital Devolution

Photographer Ben Meadors and writer Owen McCafferty recently contacted us about a new book they are putting together that will highlight, in picture and word, the vinyl format and what it means to young audiences. They are going to set out on a journey to discover what exactly is inspiring people all over the United States to buy vinyl, and share that journey in printed form.

We were honored when they asked if they could take some photos at our plant, to which of course we obliged. We also wanted to spread the word a little on this cool project, and also mention that they have a Kickstarter campaign in motion to fund it. You can learn more about the project by visiting their Kickstarter page through the widget below.

Customer Highlight — Tear It Up

Tear It Up‘s first and only proper full length album is seeing the light of day again after a 10 year hiatus. Originally released on Dead Alive Records in the glory days of 2001, Nothing To Nothing set the benchmark for early 00’s DIY Hardcore. The fine folks at Six Feet Under are good enough to be bringing it back on vinyl again after all these years.  Available on two limited colors of vinyl!
