Customer Highlight — Mercy Academy

Mercy Academy started with the inception of Lorna-Mae Ward and Christofer Lincoln. Christofer Lincoln, reprising his role as singer/songwriter after Lincoln and the Lost Prayers, teamed up with vocalist Lorna-Mae Ward to create the new Tails LP;  produced by Troy Williams at Velvet Audio. Also rounding out the outfit is accomplished guitarist Phil Najjar, and bassist John Sloan. The songs and lyrics, written by Christofer, are dark, moody, almost fairytale like interpretations of folk and country leanings. Hence the album title. Proudly pressed here at GGR, the record will be available from the band in the next few days….

Customer Highlight — Caboladies

Recorded from 2009-2011, during which time Caboladies members Eric Lanham and Chris Bush relocated from Kentucky to Chicago, Renewable Destination constitutes the duo’s most refined and focused work to date. Both as a collaborative unit and under solo monikers Carl Calm and Flower Man, Lanham and Bush have produced a wealth of limited-run releases in recent years on labels such as Arbor, Dekorder, Digitalis, and on their own Smooth Tapes imprint — each of which document their uniquely fractured sonic sensibilities. Perhaps what amazes fans most about the pair’s work is the sheer diversity of their palettes.

This extremely limited edition LP is now available from Students of Decay.

Customer Highlight — Jannick Schou

The Act of Shimmering encompasses the act of leaving conscious thought behind. It’s accepting what lies beyond the corporeal, transcending the physical; the soul is aware and the body, eyes, skin are distant empty casings. A clamorous, chaotic cacophony surrounds a beatific center. An endless assault of guitar, of noise that glistens, a poignant rigor. Jannick Schou, proprietor of tape loop drone, places himself within the tunnel of din to produce this profound work: an ethereal dream using nightmarish parts and images. Black and grays generate vibrant innards. Brightness is unearthed within the fetid mass and these six tracks immerse the listener into a raging sea to find a gentle undertow. Furious outbursts emerge from simple, slow shivers. Tremors of noise gather, reaching an elongated crescendo, becoming transformative, and shattering what form or structure was designed to contain such an outpouring of sound.

This pressing is limited to 300 copies, and the first 100 copies are available on transparent blue vinyl — exclusive to orders made direct from Experimedia.net.

Customer Highlight — In One Wind

In what seem like meager beginnings, In One Wind has blossomed from a one man act into a full fledged six piece ensemble, with a sound and reputation all their own. The brainchild of guitarist/vocalist Angelo Spagnolo, In One Wind also features vocalists Mallory Glaser and Lily Claire Nussbaum, bassist Rob Lundberg, percussionist Max Jaffe and multi-reedist Steven Lugerner.

Though steeped in the tradition of folk music, In One Wind incorporates a wide range of influences from jazz to country, even stretching effortlessly into the world of improvised music and the avant-garde. The ability to start a show with soft guitar strums and whispered vocals while seamlessly breaking into odd-metered grooves and lush three part harmonies enraptures their audiences. In One Wind is truly an idiosyncratic ensemble, an ensemble that appropriately represents their home – Brooklyn, NY – where they have quickly established a solid footing in the greater New York music scene.

Stay tuned to inonewind.com to see how you can grab a copy of their latest LP, How Bright A Shadow.

Customer Highlight — EDM

Thanks to the folks at Western Vinyl, we just completed pressing EDM‘s Night People.

Night People is a series of character studies. Alienated and out of fashion, these people stay up all night, stumbling through isolation to explore trauma and ecstasy in search of their own glamour. The boundaries of reality dissolve in their environment, and the light from within transforms street lamps at last call into beacons towards infinity. Guided through fuzz and fog, truths emerge, as the knots binding sensuality and spirit unravel. In a world defined by EDM’s music, the Night People’s stories are projected, as reality turns into a film. Like the characters in his songs, songwriter and guitarist Daniel Burton has experienced a rebirth and transformation. Night People punctuates his catalog of work under the Early Day Miners moniker. Additionally, this release finds the band coming full circle, transitioning back to the Western Vinyl label, home of Early Day Miners’ first record, Placer Found.

Just as the band’s name has been abbreviated, their process of recording and producing has been been stripped down for this album. Unlike the meticulous self-production that defined Early Day Miners’ albums, their first effort under the EDM moniker finds the band relinquishing engineering duties. Recorded and mixed by engineer Mike Bridavksy at Russian Recording in just five days, the Night People sessions have yielded the most expressive vocal and instrumental performances of Burton’s career.

You can pre-order the album now, or stay tuned to your favorite indie record store!

Customer Highlight — Magic City

Magic City has been performing around St. Louis since January 2009, and is composed of experienced musicians spanning a generation — Larry Bulawsky, Adam Hesed, Anne Tkach, Jonas Hamon, and Sam Meyer.  The band has been touring the US and Europe with different groups since 1997.

They return with their album release party celebrating Les Animaux Épouvantables on July 23 with Warm Jets USA and The Ransom Note at El Lenador in St. Louis.  Be sure to hit them up if you are around!

Customer Highlight — Hot Tuna

Hot Tuna is back with Steady As She Goes, their first all-new studio album in 20 years! Founding members Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady masterfully blend Americana rock with blues and acoustic folk on a record that hits their full spectrum of styles from electric and acoustic Hot Tuna to their days in Jefferson Airplane.

During their more than four decade long career Jorma and Jack have created some of the most significant music of our time and Steady As She Goes proves that they remain one of the most innovative bands in American music. Recorded at Levon Helm’s studio and produced by Grammy-winning producer Larry Campbell, the album captures the energy of their live performances with Barry Mitterhoff on mandolin, drummer Skoota Warner (Cyndi Lauper, Matisyahu, Santana) as well as Campbell joining them on guitar, fiddle, organ and vocals.

With their amps turned up to eleven, Hot Tuna rips into the blistering opener “Angel of Darkness” and puts the wind in your sails with the ‘hop on your Harley and take to the road’ free-spirit jams like “Easy Now Revisited” and “A Little Faster.” Steady As She Goes tastefully mixes in the acoustic side of Tuna with folk tunes like the moving “What Might Have Been” and the reflective “Second Chances.” Along with masterful covers of the blues-rock infused “If This is Love” and a funky rendition of Reverend Gary Davis’ “Children of Zion”.  The record is half-speed mastered and pressed on 180 gram vinyl, with etched art on the fourth side.  The record is available from Red House Records and  indie retailers everywhere beginning July 12!

Customer Highlight — Converge / Dropdead

A pairing of two legendary bands celebrating their joint twenty year history within the Punk/Hardcore genre.

Both songs were recorded at Kurt Ballou’s God City Studios in early 2011, and mastered by John Golden (Neurosis, Melvins, etc). “Runaway” from Converge is an instant classic for the band, unrelenting in its speed and emotional ferocity from beginning to end. While Dropdead’s “Paths of Glory” is an unforgettable political punk/hardcore anthem, that proves that the years behind the band have only strengthened their hold on the battlefront of the true underground.

We used our “vinyl bong” technique to press literally thousands of color variants of this release.  Hit up Deathwish to grab a copy before they are all gone!
