Record Highlight — Velvet Elvis

The debut full length LP from Velvet Elvis, In Deep Time was recorded at GFI Studios in the early months of 2012, where Velvet Elvis drank deep from the well of rock to bring about six dark tracks of paranoia and depravity that call up hallucinogenic visions of a future gone wrong.  The songs thunder and crash, sweep and swoon with a greater depth and clarity and vision than we have seen from this band in the past. An expanded sense of texture and dynamics move their signature plodding riffs along to crescendos that could open a hole in the sky. In Deep Time is pure unapologetic rock and roll.  The album was produced by Velvet Elvis and Sam Polizzi and mastered for vinyl by Joe Lambert.

Hand numbered, in a imited edition of 300 copies that include a lyric sheet, a section of the analog tape included in the recording process, and digital download card containing the whole album with exclusive bonus track “Brass Tacks”.  Pre-order is up now!

Record Highlight — Sydney Wayser

Sydney Wayser is a French-American, New York-based singer-songwriter who plays guitar, piano and children’s toys. Growing up in Los Angeles with summers spent in Paris, she draws on a wide range of influences and inspirations, from Edith Piaf, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Jacques Brel, to John Lennon, Jeff Buckley, and Sigur Ros

Her third album, Bell Choir Coast, has been two years in the making; struggling to express herself creatively in the midst of a miserable New York winter, Wayser decided that if she couldn’t go elsewhere, she’d bring other lands to her. “Bell Choir Coast is about a fictional land that I made up, because I couldn’t leave New York and I had to make my record. So I made up a new world in my head that was everything I wanted.”  More than an record, it is an atlas, a map past difficult years and emotional terrain, to a place of self-understanding and agency. Sydney Wayser set about to make an album, and in the end she cleared a path to a world, and in the process she found her tribe and her sound.

Record Highlight — En

Already Gone is the second full length album from West Coast dream-drone unit En, the duo of Maxwell August Croy and James Devane, following their well-received debut album The Absent Coast (released in 2010 on Root Strata, which Croy runs alongside Jefre Cantu-Ledesma). For their sophomore release, the pair have opened up their tonal palette considerably. While the comparisons that critics made of their first album to the work of Tim Hecker and Stars of the Lid still hold true, Already Gone finds Croy and Devane mining even richer sonic climes. Here, the duo pull back the curtain on some of their source material, a move that allows the diversity of their instrumentation to resonate. On The Sea Saw Swell, Croy’s acoustic koto pings across the stereo spectrum as a looping guitar figure from Devane apparates from the haze of a beautiful, slowly shifting drone. The side-long closer Elysia is likely the duo’s defining recording to date, an epic slow-burner that reaches heights both angelic and cacophonous. Ultimately, it is the harmonious marriage of the organic and the obscured that recurs throughout the album that proves its defining trait, and it is precisely what makes En stand out in the ever-growing field of contemporary drone/ambient musics.

En tour Japan with Grouper in late April.

Available from Experimedia, the vinyl edition consists of 500 copies total (100 clear, 400 black), and includes digital download coupons.

Record Highlight — Lovedrug

Available today (03.06.12)!  Lovedrug‘s fourth studio album – Wild Blood.

We really had fun putting this one together with the artist and label – one of the most elaborate packages we have worked on to date.  Includes a fold-out poster insert, and die cut jacket with a window revealing beautiful black-and-white photography.  Not to mention, 10 new tracks and an alternate take on an older song.  Hit up the band’s website for a variety of ways to purchase the record today – including two extremely limited edition color variants available only through American Dream Records.

Customer Highlight — I Am The Avalanche

Courtesy of Clifton Motel Records, IATA‘s first new album since their 2005 self-titled effort, Avalanche United dropped on vinyl just about a week ago.  The first pressing flew out, so Clifton Motel hit us up for a rush re-pressing last week, which are now all out and available.  Hit up the label to grab a copy while this second pressing it still available!

Produced by the band, executive produced and engineered by their prolific drummer Brett “The Ratt” Romnes, and mixed by Machine (Fall Out Boy, Every Time I Die, Four Year Strong), Avalanche United is addictively melodic and blisteringly raw to its very core. Featuring 12 anthemic songs and absolutely zero filler, the album includes “Brooklyn Dodgers,” the defiant “Holy Fuck”, the epic and somber “Dead Friends” and “The Gravedigger’s Argument,” featuring Anthony Raneri from Bayside. Throughout, Caruana’s distinctive voice drips with defiance, humor and proud vulnerability as he sings about hope, heartbreak, death, defying adversity and the bonds between family, lovers and friends.

Customer Highlight — The Graduate

In addition, vocalist Corey Warning has handwritten the lyrics to each track on Anhedonia, as well as “Gunslinger” and “We’re On The Same Page.” These lyric sheets are limited to one per song ,coming out to 14 total sheets, each completely unique from the other, are autographed by Corey, and will be inserted Willy Wonka Golden Ticket-style into 14 of the 75 Limited Edition orders.

Hit up American Dream Records to grab a copy, as each of these limited edition variants will probably not last very long….

Announcement: New Machine Acquired!

UPDATE #1

09/01/11 — the extruder has been completely restored…..looks better than the day it was bought new!

Original post from 08/06/11 —

Wow, what a difference two years make!  We are approaching our 2-year anniversary this month, and to celebrate, what better way than to move a “new” pressing machine onto our shop floor!  (Well, we’d like to say we planned it that way, but in actuality, it’s just a happy coincidence).

On Thursday, we finished moving a Finebilt press and extruder to GGR from the former Boddie Recording Company pressing plant in Cleveland.

While this is certainly exciting news from the perspective of adding capacity, many of us here are perhaps even more excited about the back-story surrounding this machine.

Thomas and Louise Boddie founded the Boddie Recording Company during the 1950’s.  Mr. Boddie brokered vinyl pressing through a handful of regional pressing plants throughout the 1960’s – mostly regional acts, but not of one specific genre.

In 1973, Mr. and Mrs. Boddie had the opportunity to purchase some of their own pressing equipment.  They moved two Finebilt presses into their eastside Cleveland garage, and built the necessary electrical and water lines to begin pressing wax in-house.  Throughout the 70s and most of the 80s, many  7” and 12” records were pressed in this small building.  There is a fantastic compilation LP (and cassette/CD) set, along with a small series of 7” records released by the Numero Group which chronicle many of the recordings pressed at Boddie.  The plant ceased operation in the mid 1990’s, and sadly, Mr. Boddie passed away in 2006.

Through a stumbled-upon 1960’s Billboard advertisement, and a tip by Cleveland music industry veteran Clay Pasternack, we were able to make contact with Ms. Boddie earlier this year.  The presses were indeed still intact in the eastside Cleveland garage, and the Boddie Recording Company sign still adorns the front lawn of the adjacent home.

All of us Gotta Groovies are vinyl consumers and music fans – many even musicians ourselves.  We are proud to be a part of what is not only a world-wide “vinyl resurgence” (as if records ever really went away); but perhaps even more excited to be a small part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame City’s resurging music movement.  We were humbled and excited when Ms. Boddie agreed to sell us the equipment, and we look forward to breathing new life into a piece of what in many circles is a legendary local music imprint.  Stay tuned as we rehabilitate this press into our operation…
