Image result for turnpike troubadours a long way from your heart

With their highly anticipated fourth album A Long Way from Your Heart, the Turnpike Troubadours sextet is poised for even bigger breakthroughs. Narratives put to music are nothing new, but Felker and his bandmates have upped the ante, creating a web of unforgettable characters that show up on album after album in songs that are both catchy and musically complex: men and women with their backs against their wall, represented realistically but also imbued with dignity. “It feels like going home to see that those characters are still alive in a way that movies and literary writers have always done,” frontman Evan Felker says of the recurring favorites. “It feels good. There they are, all based on people that I know and love. They’re composite characters based on real people.”

A Long Way from Your Heart was produced by Grammy winner Ryan Hewitt (The Avett Brothers, Flogging Molly, Red Hot Chili Peppers). The result is a rare triumph––an album that hooks immediately but then rewards listeners willing to dig deeper. “I love what we as a band have turned into and how we treat songs,” Felker says. “That’s something we’ve grown into––adding some sort of oddly theatrical element to the musicianship to help the story along, to sum up where or who the character is to give him a little bit of landscape. It’s not just an acoustic guitar and a guy telling you what somebody’s doing.”

Record Highlights – Dark Entries Releases

Four new titles shipped for Dark Entries Records – pre-orders for each are up now!

Ghibli – I’m Looking For You

Ghibli is the solo project of musician, producer, and vocalist Alberto Garbelli, from Milan, Italy. At the age of 23, while reading a comic book, he encountered the word Ghibli, which is the name of the wind of the North African desert – and also a Maserati car model. Inspired by Klaus Nomi and Nina Hagen, he began to sing in an operatic fashion. During this time Alberto would frequent the local discotheques. Watching the unique mix of performers and dancers, Alberto lost his inhibitions and was inspired to become an artist.

Some Bizarre – Don’t Be Afraid

Some Bizarre are a trio formed in Bergamo, Italy in 1983. The line-up is Marino Scarabelli (music, producer), Tiberio “Tyber” Scarfone (arrangement, producer) and Stefano Brignoli (lyrics, vocals). Tiberio was a DJ at a local discotheque, where he met Marino. Initially they considered calling themselves Funny Marvin, but settled on Some Bizarre after recruiting Stefano, whose initials mirror the name.

Brand Image – Are You Loving?

Brand Image is a trio formed in Bergamo, Italy in 1983. Created by the same group of musicians as their previous project Some Bizarre. The line-up is Marino Scarabelli (music, producer), Tiberio “Tyber” Scarfone (arrangement, producer) and Stefano Brignoli (lyrics) and vocalist Mauro Farina. Originally, Stefano sang the song but his performance was too close to the brand new Some Bizarre single, so they recruited Mauro for distinction.

Danio Dell’Aere – Eagles In The Night

Dario Dell’Aere is a New Wave musician, producer and singer from Milan, Italy. At the end of the 1970’s Dario performed in a mime show influenced by the glam cliches of David Bowie. In 1979, he met Victor Life outside a cinema, and began a lifelong collaboration of projects: Diamond Dogs, Ice Eyes and Fockewulf 190. Musically, the duo were inspired by the Human League’s “Reproduction” and John Foxx’s “Metamatic”, while they took visual cues from the New Romantics Visage and Ultravox. With the Fockewulf 190 moniker, they created their own dark blend of Italo disco and New Wave, and released the hit singles “Gitano” and “Body Heat” in 1984.

Graphic (HD035) cover art

Austin-based darkwave metal trio Troller is proud to announce their second LP, Graphic (out 4.8.16 on HOLODECK). The music video for “Not Here,” the first single off of the new LP, premiered on FACT Magazine recently. Despite the underground success of the critically acclaimed 2012 self-titled debut, Graphic manages to eclipse the broad appeal of the first record’s addictively ominous pop anthems. Troller’s focus on layered composition and biting sound design has resulted in a highly developed work that embodies the band’s unique raw form while raising the benchmark on fidelity and experimentation. Graphic arrives perfectly unhinged and hideously sophisticated, reinterpreting familiar elements from their debut LP, and propelling the trio’s provocative sensibilities explicitly further.

Holodeck is excited to announce its official 2016 SXSW showcase, which will take place at Lucky Lounge in Austin on Friday, March 18th. The lineup features heavy-hitting Holodeck artists, including Troller, SSLEEPERHOLD, Dylan Cameron, Samantha Glass, and Bill Converse, as well as New Orleans synth duo ((PRESSURES)). The night will be headlined by Inhalt, a Bay Area-based darkwave band.

Record Highlight — Suit of Lights

Break Open the Head cover art

Record Highlight — Japanese Breakfast

A side project from her work as front woman of Philadelphia indie punk band Little Big League, Michelle Zauner released a tape in June 2013 under the solo moniker Japanese Breakfast. The tape was titled June and boasted thirty tracks written and recorded every day of the month. A stark deviation from Little Big League’s guitar-based indie rock, it showcased Zauner’s dark lyrics, unique vocals and inherent knack for pop melody.

Two bedroom pop cassettes later, Japanese Breakfast returns with its first full-fledged LP and vinyl release, Psychopomp. The album explores Zauner’s experimental interests and hosts a wide range of sound: jarring anime samples, minimalist ballads, rhythms and synths reminiscent of Tango in the Night-era Fleetwood Mac paired with the moody intimacy of Mount Eerie. Psychopomp revisits and revamps lo-fi tracks and adds chilling new songs to fall in love with.

Record Highlight — Jeremy Gara

jeremygara-limn-frontcover

Jeremy Gara, drummer of Arcade Fire, announces his first solo album – Limn.  Recorded over the last many months and assembled this last fall, Limn is a melodic, dense, and noisy ambient record… a collection of organized improvisations, of solo creative moments in response to familiar collaborative efforts.  Divinity, the first song on the album, is streaming here and here.  Mastered by Helge Sten (Deathprod, Supersilent), Limn will be released March 11 by NRCSS Industry on vinyl, on cassette, and digitally.

Record Highlight — Ernest Ernie & The Sincerities

Sincerely Yours... Greatest Hits Vol. I cover art

Ernest Ernie & The Sincerities’ LP Sincerely Yours…Greatest Hits Vol. 1 is the real deal, a bona fide classic vintage of which we are unlikely to experience again in this lifetime. It captures everything the discerning listener loves about big bands, gospel, soul and rhythm & blues. It represents the new sound from the old school, and harkens to a time when musical expression truly mattered. Thanks to Ernest Ernie, it matters once again.

Record Highlight — The Coal Creek Boys

The Coal Creek Boys debut album, “Hard At It In Old Town,” makes its vinyl debut as a special edition geared to the band’s hardcore and dedicated fans!  This limited edition pressing includes a hand silk screened numbered jacket, a download card of bonus content not found anywhere else, and a fold out poster.

The Coal Creek Boys are not Country Music by today’s standards in any way shape or form. The Boys can be placed into categories of Red Dirt, Rock, Outlaw – even Alternative Indie Folk – yet they are in no way limited to these genres. John Paul Smith writes music focusing on North America’s historical events and leads the band with as much authenticity as possible. The band is a direct reflection of their locale, Southern Alberta and Eastern British Columbia. Both Smith and Dino Scavo were raised in coal mining country and relate well with the Southern US, bearing the same hardworking mentality of these coal mining communities, as well as deep roots in family tradition.
