Record Highlight — Tor Lundvall

Some words from Tor Lundvall about the creation of The Shipyard:

In the Autumn of 1990, I documented a handful of spontaneous audio experiments on a portable tape recorder.  One of these pieces was a quiet instrumental entitled ‘In a Shipyard’.  I worked on a few variations over the following months and then I put the track to rest, hoping to expand on the idea at some point in the future.  Almost 20 years later, I finally started recording an album based on the themes and images this old track evoked.

‘The Shipyard in Winter’ was the first new recording to take shape.  This track was constructed around the soft, mechanical loop I used in my original demos.  I then altered the loop to construct ‘The Shipyard at Dawn’ and ‘The Shipyard at Night’, both of which appear on the album.  ’The Shipyard in Winter’ and another out-take entitled ‘Safety in Grey’ were released on the Tursa compilation “With Friends Like These” in 2010.

The nautical and industrial sounds on the album were created from scratch and come from some surprising sources.  The distant, sluggish melody on ‘Under Snow Conditions’ is actually a slowed down fragment of distorted piano from ‘Blankets of Snow’ (an out-take from the “Ice” sessions).  The two final tracks, ‘Blue Rain Ships’ and ‘Grey Rain Ships’, were constructed by running randomly overlapping tape loops from my archives, so there is an element of chance in these pieces.

This instrumental collection of songs is limited to 500 hand numbered vinyl copies (comes with a free MP3 download coupon and artwork by Tor Lundvall), and is available for pre-order now from Dais Records.

Record Highlight — Wizard Rifle

The two-man wrecking crew known collectively as Wizard Rifle first came together in the autumn of 2009. Based in Portland, OR and drawing influences from Black Sabbath, Lightning Bolt, High on Fire, Karp, Sleep, Sonic Youth and Nomeansno, Wizard Rifle are as difficult to describe as they are to ignore. Eclectic, innovative, and all-around out there, their sound is a constantly-evolving, always adapting entity that changes with their moods. Wizard Rifle have done their best to spread their tapestry of noise across the entire continent, completing two full US / Canada tours Arabrot alongside festival appearances at SXSW, Fall Into Darkness, and PDX Pop Now and gigs supporting the likes of Lightning Bolt, Valient Thorr, Black Cobra, Yob, Agalloch and more.

The first 100 copies of Speak Loud Say Nothing are on exclusive VINYL BONG colored wax! Pre-order begins 05.31!

Record Highlight — Garrison Hawk

Survive is the long awaited, full-length from Garrison Hawk with Sly & Robbie. He’s a toaster, a rapper, mc, a great writer…but most of all he’s a bad ass singer. “Wild” is the party track; “Murderer,” “What She Wants,” “Reggae Music” and “Don’t Ya Know” are the hooky business; “Gangster For Life” and “Running Red” have that uptempo Jamaican feel; “Apocalypse” features a stripped down Raga muffin style; and the title track is an anthem featuring Ethiopian artist Teddy Afro and Gigi.  This is the perfect LP to kick off your summer…available at indie record stores everywhere!

Record Highlight — Mars

MarsLive At Artists Space – available in an edition of 500 from Feeding Tube Records.

In May of 1978 there was a five night music festival at Artists Space on Hudson Street in Tribeca.  Although almost no one cared at the time, the event has since entered the halls of legend, as one of the signal events in the history of the No Wave era – one that managed to include both the Lower East Side bands  and those fronted by their Western contemporaries. On the final night of the festival the two bands playing were Mars and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. What we are presenting to you today are both sets by Mars – the most mysterious, and bizarrely-styled NY band of their day. One set takes up each side, and while they are similar in song selection, it’s wild to hear how different they are in terms of attack, sonics and approach. The quartet – Nancy Arlen, China Burg, Sumner Crane, Mark Cuningham – was never captured at its mutational best in the studio, but this live slab is revelatory.  Tunings, structures and rhythms from a place Capt. Beefheart once called “the other side of the fence,” this is Mars at their most glorious.

Record Highlight — You Blew It!

You Blew It! might be one of the last great hold-outs in the emo revival that took over the last decade. More sane than Algernon Cadwallader, less sonically-spacious than Cap’n Jazz, YBI! cherrypicks from 90’s emo and indie in a fashion that many have aimed for but few have achieved. These cat-loving, taco-eating dudes have been holding it down in their native Orlando scene since February 2009. Since then, they’ve had enough lineup changes to see something like twelve members come and go all while completing four out-of-state tours and a few notable gigs with The Get Up Kids.

The brand new album from You Blew It!, Grow Up, Dude is the band’s debut full length. Featuring twelve new tracks, the first pressing is out of 500 and split between 75 clear w/ green splatter, 100 opaque green, 125 white, 200 Black.  Pre-order is up now with Topshelf Records!
