RSD Highlight #6 — Made In Aurora

Available on Record Store Day at Kiss The Sky Records in Aurora, Illinois:  Made In Aurora

This is a store release — not an “official” record store day release.  However, if you don’t live near Aurora, IL and would like a copy, just reach out to Kiss The Sky and they will certainly be able to send you a copy!

Made in Aurora: Volume One is a collaborative album of original music recorded over three days in March 2011 in downtown Aurora, Illinois. 30 musicians in 11 different band lineups contributed 16 songs that range in style from roots-rock to swampbilly to alt-country. It is classified loosely as an Americana release.

On RSD, the project will be presented on vinyl, with a “bootleg” CD enclosed in the package containing all content from the vinyl LP plus a number of additional songs. Listeners can enjoy on a turntable or on CD.

All Made in Aurora profits after expenses will be donated to the Paul Ruby Foundation in Geneva, Illinois to support research for a cure to Parkinson’s disease.

RSD Highlight #5 — GBV Tribute

Available on Record Store Day:

Various Artists – Sing For Your Meat: A Tribute To Guided By Voices

This collection of GBV songs features renditions by Thurston Moore, the Flaming Lips, Kelly Deal and many others.  While the official street date is Record Store Day (pressed on an amazing variety of colors of wax, if we don’t say so ourselves), the record will be re-pressed in the coming months ahead.

There are tons of release and listening parties happening with regard to this record, in addition to the tons of other RSD festivities around the country on Saturday.  Hit up No More Fake Labels for all of the latest news regarding this record!

RSD Highlight #4

Available on Record Store Day

For anyone interested in smart, tuneful and inventive  pop music in the early 1980’s, The dB’s were the band for you- that is if you could find their records.  Distribution woes overcame critical raves, and the band’s last recording was released in 1987.  Until now.

We were stoked to have the opportunity to press the band’s first recording in over 2o years.  The 7″ single “Picture Sleeve” / “Write Back”  is a timeless return to form.  Ask for at your favorite indie record store on RSD.

RSD Highlight #3 — Wavves / Trash Talk Split 7″

Available on Record Store Day:

Wavves / Trash Talk Thorns / TV Luv Song 7″

A couple of us were lucky enough to catch Trash Talk while at SXSW – this split 7″ is a killer collector’s piece for fans of TT and Wavves.  The record is extremely limited — only 500 manufactured!  (not all stores will have a copy….but there are plenty of other things to grab while visiting your favorite indie retailer on RSD…or any day for that matter!)

RSD Highlight #2 — Shuggie Otis

Available on Record Store Day:

Shuggie Otis: Inspiration Information – World Psychedelic Classics 2

Another hard-to-find classic album – this is the first time Inspiration Information will be available on vinyl in the U.S. in many years.  This RSD-exclusive 180 gram double LP includes a second record containing four tracks from Otis’s 1971 album Freedom Flight.

RSD Highlight #1 – Os Mutantes

For the next week, we will be highlighting several RSD vinyl releases that were pressed here at GGR.  While we don’t have enough days to highlight every release; for the next seven days, we will highlight one each day that was particularly favored by of one of the GGR staffers.

You can grab any one of these releases (each in very limited quantities) at a variety of indie record stores around the country on next Saturday, April 16 (Record Store Day).  Of course, don’t let that stop you from coming in to any of these fine establishments any other day of the year – as far as we are concerned, it’s record store everyday!

Os MutantesEverything Is Possible: World Psychedelic Classics 1

Reissued by Luaka Bop for RSD2011 (on 180 gram wax) for the first time in ten years!  This compilation contains some of the best, and often forgotten, work of the 60’s psych group’s career.

Customer Highlight — Cherry Bombers / Space Fuzz

Coming very soon from Helltunes — The Cherry Bombers / Space Fuzz split 7″ on limited edition random color mix vinyl (every record in the run is different).  You can get a preview of The Cherry Bombers here and of Space Fuzz here….then stay tuned to Helltunes for the latest news on this brand new 7″!

Customer Highlight — Expire

Expire, the latest addition to the Six Feet Under roster is leading the way of a movement of a young crop of bands based in the Midwest. Having released a demo in 2009 followed by the “Grim Rhythm” 7″ in March of 2010, Expire has been busy writing songs, touring, and showing the hardcore scene what the future sounds like.

“Suffer The Cycle” is the new 7″ from Expire on Six Feet Under Records. Recorded at Young Brothers Studios with Taylor Young (Nails), Expire has put together 4 songs of straightforward, heavy-hitting hardcore. Members of Expire live in different parts of the midwest and the band seems to draw influences from the east and west coasts, finding a happy medium with heavy grooves reminiscent of the NYHC style and fast parts that are worthy of a good ‘ole California circle pit. If the best of both worlds sounds good to you, see Expire on tour, mark your calendars and get ready for “Suffer The Cycle.”

Three colors of vinyl available on a first come, first serve basis.  Pre-order now!

Customer Highlight — My Canadian Girlfriend

Mastered by Chicago Mastering,  Chicago indie rockers My Canadian Girlfriend are releasing their new LP, Shogun very soon… (finished pressing this week). Stay tuned to the band’s website for info on grabbing a copy for yourself – you can also listen to a preview on the band’s myspace.

Customer Highlight — Stepkids

Coming very soon from Stones Throw Records, the debut single from The StepkidsShadows On Behalf. The sleeve contains no printing, only embossed type. This 12″ single will be limited to 1000 pieces, and (if we don’t say so ourselves) is pressed on some of the most amazing looking splatter color wax we have ever produced (every record varies in color/pattern).  The Stepkids is the first of several new artists to be released by Stones Throw this year.
