Record Highlight — Alessandro Adriani

Alessandro Adriani has become a trusted source for all kinds of beyond-the-grave coldwave delights, from Maoupa Mazzochetti to The Neon Judgement.  Aside from his work in releasing forgotten gems and up to the minute synth incantations, Adriani has also been quietly issuing his own music. This has primarily taken the shape of Newclear Waves, having surfaced on split tapes and 7”s on Mannequin as well as an album on Desire back in 2012. Under his own name, production has been less forthcoming, although Adriani did pop up on Nico Fidenco’s 2015 album Zombi Holocaust with a remix of the track “The Magic Is In The Process”.

Now though it’s time for the Mannequin boss to delve back into the long player game with Montagne Trasparenti, via Monofonus Press. Adriani in fact collaborated with Willie Burns as Interbrain and delivered a track to the IXTAB compilationon the Austin, Texas-based label last year, but now he returns with nine tracks that further expand on his own interpretation of ghoulish body music.

Prairie Empire — The Salt

Prairie Empire is a Brooklyn-based band fronted by Brittain Ashford with Nim Ben-Reuvenon drums. The band will be touring this summer with the support of Jacki Paolella on bass, keyboard and vocals.

The first Prairie Empire album was released on Trailer Fire Records and recorded (unknowingly) in a Portland living room with the band Harlowe. Prior to that Brittain recorded a handful of things in her bedroom under her own name, most notably There, But For You, Go I, which was released on Paris-based Waterhouse Records.

When not writing for Prairie Empire Brittain performs with Dave Malloy‘s Ghost Quartet; she will head to Broadway in the fall with Malloy’s Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. Nim Ben-Reuven is a freelance art director & graphic artist and is a hand-lettering badass.

Their next album, The Salt, will be released on Commodore Trotter Records very soon!

The Gooch Palms — Introverted Extroverts

Picture

Newcastle, Australia via Los Angeles punk sweethearts The Gooch Palms have firmly planted their feet in American soil and have played over 150 shows across the USA and Canada to packed rooms and rave reviews since arriving in March 2015. They are fast becoming known as one of the most entertaining live bands in America, something audiences downunder have known for years!

Their debut album NOVO’S was released in 2013 on Australian label Anti Fade Records and has since been re-released on Burger Records in the USA.

Despite being extremely busy with touring in 2015 the duo still managed to squeeze in a recording session with producer Bill Skibbe (The Kills, Black Keys, Wild Belle, Protomartyr, Jacuzzi Boys) to work on their second album in Benton Harbour, MI.  Keeping true to their DIY ethos, the pair will be releasing their second album Introverted Extroverts very soon on their own label Summer Camp Records, and will continue the hard work with an extensive worldwide tour to follow.

Grace Love & The True Loves – Self Titled

Grace Love and the True Loves cover art

Grace Love and the True Loves is an original 9-piece soul sensation from Seattle, WA. Following in the footsteps of Stax, Motown, King and Daptone artists, but with a sound all their own, Grace Love and the True Loves are setting a course as the next hot soul and funk number ready to sweep the nation with true cross-over appeal. On vocals, Grace Love is Seattle’s shining jewel of grit, beauty and power – think Etta James and Betty Wright meet Mahalia Jackson. Backed by the True Loves, her vocals float effortlessly over kickin’ back beats, smart horns, syncopated rhythms and sweet B-3 color. It’s the hip swinging, booty shaking, heart freeing sound you crave to hear live, but rarely do. Recorded directly to tape at Studio Litho, the full length self-titled album, is sure to bring rave reviews with a sound altogether unique to the Pacific Northwest.

The Self Titled record is available in a very limited quantity now.

Hackensaw Boys — Charismo

CharismoCoverArt.jpg

Charismo is the Hackensaw Boys record you’ve been waiting to hear. The 11-track album feels like the zenith release of the band’s 17 years, gathering their diverse life experiences and myriad of roots influences, and crystallizing them into a magnum opus on the Hackensaw way of being. Traditional Appalachian and Delta music lay the groundwork, but it’s injected with a heavy dose of the contemporary, good-times-roll kind of spit and vinegar the band has become known for over the years.

Produced by Larry Campbell – who has lent his talents to Bob Dylan, Levon Helm, and countless others – Charismosees the band reeled in and slightly refined, though still as spirited as ever. The songs (all written by longtime Hackensaws David Sickmen and Ferd Moyse) are tinged with an attitude of scrappy resilience, spinning tales and metaphors of everyday, working class struggles and triumphs. With Campbell’s production, the Hackensaw’s somewhat casual, porch-front aesthetic is sharpened around the edges, focusing in on the simple beauty of their melodies and the earnestness in their delivery.

Calliope Musicals — Time Owes You Nothing

Texas Platters

Calliope Musicals is a cheerful psychedelic party folk band from Austin TX. Their high-energy live performance focuses on involving the crowd. A psychedelic squad of musicians fill in their folksy roots with a mix of vibraphone, tribal drums, bass, lead guitar and explosive vocals. The band exudes feel-good vibes that aim to swallow listeners and spit them out as happier versions of their former selves.

The new album – Time Owes You Nothing – is available now!

Quaker City Night Hawks – El Astronauta

Pre-order EL ASTRONAUTA on iTunes and get 2 new tracks “Good Evening” & “Mockingbird” now! http://smarturl.it/ElAstronauta
The Quaker City Night Hawks – Sam Anderson and David Matsler on vocals and guitars, Pat Adams on bass, Aaron Haynes on drums — are a Southern band, to be sure. But it’s not the South we’ve come to expect from Rock and Roll. Equally influenced by ZZ Top and science fiction, the Dallas Observer’s Best Band of 2015 writes of landscapes both familiar and foreign, and they are set to deliver their 9-track El Astronauta debut on Lightning Rod Records. Eras collide in every aspect of the album, from the title—which merges Texas’ Spanish and Mexican roots with its role at the center of the modern space race—to its pop art cover, which depicts a classic ‘70s hot rod that’s been modified into a spacecraft hovering over an exotic desert landscape.
