Customer Highlight — The Fleshtones

“Pardon us for living, but the graveyard is full.” Or so goes the title of a new documentary film telling the tale of The Fleshtones. While that sentiment is a bit tongue-in-cheek, it’s also true. The Fleshtones have been grinding out garage rock before garage rock was even called garage rock, and turning rock clubs like Max’s Kansas City into impromptu discos for over 30 years.

While chart hits and magazine covers weren’t to be their fate; a reputation as one of the the hardest working, most sincere rock bands on the planet was cultivated in the process. The result of that distinction is their new album Brooklyn Sound Solution featuring the legendary Lenny Kaye . In addition to his role as long-time guitarist for Patti Smith, Kaye also curated the seminal garage and psychedelic music compilations Nuggets.

Available through indie retailers nationally starting 03.15.11, you can pre-order now and get a free download!

Customer Highlight — Per Purpose

Per Purpose are a three piece from Brisbane combining a rapid minutemen-funk-jazz approach with rollicking Australiana in the tradition of bands like The Go-Betweens and Tactics. Works out pretty good in the end.

Customer Highlight — Soft Kill

Thank you to Fast Weapons for enlisting GGR for the first time on the brand new album by Soft KillAn Open Door.

Soft Kill’s earliest experiments took place in September of 2010 and the name was decided upon the following month.  With no set agenda in mind, the pair –Tobias and Shiloe– crafted emotionally uplifting and hopeful songs influenced by their shared love for Howard Devoto, The Cure, Wire/Colin Newman and Killing Joke.  They are joined live by Nathan Howdeshell, Matthew Hunter and Maxamillion Avalon.

An Open Door consists of nine songs created between August and November of 2010, bouncing between The Mime in Los Angeles and the House of Ohms in San Luis Obispo.  The album was recorded at Jackpot Studios in Portland, Oregon with some overdubs at Klickitat (also in Portland) a couple days after those sessions.  Justin Gradin played drums and Mattey Hunter handled most of the bass parts.

The record will be available nationally through indie record stores on March 15, and you can also grab a copy from Fast Weapons direct.

Customer Highlight — Peter J Woods

Songs For Nothing is now available from After Music Recordings!

A soundtrack for the end of civilization, written for those who can only watch it happen on Youtube with the camera miles away. Songs for Nothing is something of a capstone in Woods’ musical trajectory, combining the atmosphere of “Creation Death Machine,” the creeping walls of “Fairweather Mask” and various textural elements that showed up on the 7″s, tapes and cdrs inbetween. Overall, though, this record finds Woods’ in his most powerful form to date, losing a minimal amount of past experimentations to make way for a more straight forward, pissed off approach. Crashing pianos, broken electronics, a variety of different vocal styles, synth swells and field reocrdings combine with a thematic push focused on chronicling the trajectory of the world and our inability to control it. This is a record about screaming truth to power in a sound proof room.

Customer Highlight — J Roddy Walston & The Business

It’s hard to think of a bigger musical swap than relocating your band from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Baltimore, Maryland. But in 2004, that’s exactly what J-Roddy Walston and the Business did. For the group–known for their infectious brand of no-frills Americana rock–it was quite the change. But since then, they’ve adjusted to their new locale and have garnered a reputation for their live shows, where they’ve been known to spontaneously break out into rowdy covers of Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls” [audience interaction required.] A few weeks before their SXSW 2010 performance, Spinner asked the band whether the nightly Southern-style goal of their live shows was to get crowds singing, dancing, and drinking. To which they answered: “Yes. Preferably all at the same time.”

Long in the making, we shipped a very limited run of vinyl of the band’s latest self-titled album.  We’re not really sure how you can pick one up, but if you can make it to one of their live shows, even if you can’t grab a copy of the album, we’re sure you will have a good time.
